Guest guest
This is not a community TCM web hosting service as i first thought Tim. In my eyes anything that asks for money is spam and at the end of 'casting your pointless vote' for God knows what, it asks for money. This is spam. I will delete your original message from the group as it contains a spam link. Please everyone ignore the spam link below. Guest guest
Attilio, Several hours before Tim posted, by strange coincidence, I stumbled onto the website he suggested and didn't find it as the spam you interpreted. The site only asks for money for a " plus " membership. There's a minimum amount of people per city for anything to be planned, 5. As of a couple minutes ago, the site said 11 people in the whole world are signed up for the Meetup. It looks to me that, for a while at least, this meetup is nothing more than a waiting list for something to happen. Is this a scam to get us put on even more spam lists? Not a clue. Buying travel tickets on line from a discounter already trashed the E address I used for this new list membership. What have I to loose? Something to note however; How I originally surfed onto the site was while looking for people to learn/practice Chinese with. The site also offers a " Chinese Language Meetup " . If I understand the site correctly I'll have an opportunity to meet some of the other 74 students and Chinese tutors in Chicago who have signed up. Last I looked the meeting place suggested was a bookstore I'd probably be visiting that day anyway (so why buy a " plus " membership to get a vote). Is the whole thing a scam? Once again, not a clue. Providing the meeting actually happens at a place I'm not afraid to venture out to and during the daylight hours on a day I have no classes, I'll report back to this list with my assessment of the " Chinese Language Meetup " after 4 Jan. or whenever those " plus " memberships plan it. Tim, The Illinois AOBTA chapter has a couple members who are either graduates, students or teachers at Midwest's Chicago branch. If you're interested on coming to the next IL- AOBTA meeting let me know and I'll relay you the information of when and where when I get it. Guest guest
I found the meeting places strange aswell and on one was on there. Like why meet in a bookstore? Very odd, then you get to vote for the meet. Why meet in the first place when we have conferences and dicussion groups like this and then it asks you to join and pay money. I still think this is spam. A decade of so ago the bookstores realized single people were using their shops as an alternative to hanging out in bars to meet other singles so the stores started organizing " singles nights " . Its grown to all sorts of interest groups planning meetings at bookstores. Many book stores here in the USA have coffee shops and meeting areas. Some book stores hire entertainment on the weekends. Some, like the bookstore suggested here in Chicago, have classrooms for workshops. > Why meet in the first place when we have conferences and > dicussion groups like this Whoa, and I thought I was Metal jitsu! ;-) Networking! I still think this is spam. Well, as I've already shared, I haven't paid them any money yet (and don't intend to). I'll report back if the Chinese Language Meetup was worth my time. Guest guest
Attilio, Your correct. While I was able to sign up for this site, I was unable to submit a venue without becoming a "memberplus" which involves making a credit card payment. Every time I tried to engage the website in some way it automatically popped up a window to make a payment. Guest guest
Penel, I just tried to suggest a venue in San Francisco and was blocked from doing so until I paid money. What's that about? I tried several other ways to engage the site and found I had to pay money at every step of the way. Basically it just advertises stuff and then if you want to interact with the site, you have to pay money. So explain to me, my dear friend, how this is not spam? This is not the way political or cultural meetups happen. Guest guest
Hi Penel, I would be interested in the Chicago MCOM meeting info. I could probably get the info at the Racine branch also. If the meeting is close enough (read " far enough north of Chicago " ) I could probably make time. In any case I appreciate the offer . . . .
