Just a short question for the group -In our practise we utilise cupping fairly often and have had some positive results ,but has any one out there had some patients with cup marks still present over 2 weeks or longer -(not burn maks)-What can this manifestation be a result of ?-would it be advisable to continue or wait till the marks subside ?

One more Question, dose any one use cupping for tonification -if so ,why and how!

Dear Rodd,

In my experience, if marks persist for more than 2 weeks, then I would take

this as an indication of an underlying Spleen Qi Deficiency. Spleen is not

holding Blood, and therefore bruising is not only taking place, but the skin

is failing to heal.

Tonify the Spleen with Acupuncture, Moxa (if ther is no Yin Xu present) on

St 36, with Herbs and the bruising will heal. Also, until the person has

been tonified, I would not cup again. Obviously, I don't know the condition

you were treating, but lasting bruising would lead me to think that the

person's Qi is not strong enough yet for the moving of Qi and Blood that

takes place during cupping.

Best wishes,

Naava.

I have to disagree with Naava, despite the fact that what she says

makes sense, at least on the " virtual " level (no mockery intended).

Cupping is usually performed in order to relieve exogenous

pathogens, especially wind, as someone in the group has already

pointed out. It is used only in excessive conditions of Wind and

cold, less often in heat condition or toxic blood. This is usually

performed as blood-cupping. BTW the Chinese, and other cultures for

that matter, call this procedure Wind-glasses or Wind-cups, and not

merely cupping. The dark marks of the cups usually stay for a longer

period of time on the skin in cases where SHA exist. Sha is a

latent/dormant or active chronic external pathogen which is lodged

within the skin, muscle or joints tissues. Also Sha treatment,

causes red/purple blotches to appear on the skin for extended period

of time . As for the Spleen Qi xu pattern for this problem, the

opposite is more likely. Sp Qi xu patients often exhibit pale face

and skin, as well as some blood deficiency or thinness. These

patients usually exhibit very pale cupping marks, if any at all.

Dear Rodd

I have managed to bring together Ten cupping Methods, some Tonifying, some Draining and some even methods (Look -Cupping Therapy ISBN 0443 06038X). As far as the bruising marks are concerned, you will always get bruising as a result of using Medium, Strong or Moving cupping techniques. When SP Qi xu is the pattern then I would not advise the use of Strong or Moving cupping methods (they are Draining techniques!) It is quite normal after the first session for the bruise to last longer i,e 2-3 weeks.

Best of health
