Guest guest
David:There is an agreement that certain pulse practices be withheld, and I haven't written about them or discussed them. But there is so much information that was earlier considered private that I've found in the public domain--particularly the Nan Jing and Mai Jing. Yet, like the story of the purloined letter, some things are hidden in plain sight and require mature skills to see or really understand them. Many important ideas--from our system's point of view--are only mentioned in the classics, sometimes just in the commentaries, that can be developed and become major practices. Jim:And knowledge has a way of "defending" itself. You can't really give it away. Most people will simply not put in the time or energy to learn how to do them. They would rather do something easy and comfortable. Marco: This is a phenomen that I am trying to grasp here in Guatemala, coming here I now realise I was lazy and comfortable with more or less what was handed to me on a plate... but reading peoples post here and else where as well as genially needing to be a better practioner although I am more or less the only one I am aware of thus far (in fact even if I was the only one here it would not negate the fact that I need to be a better practitioner). I for example am still to really try to at least understand something that Jim has made available and have read paradigms translation of pulse classic Mai jing and listen to Z'ev's recent presentation at the CHA conference held earlier this year and thus far the only "real" thing I am beginning to "tune" into is that people like having there pulses felt... Sometimes maybe I can feel sos and so and sometimes even things are "materlised" in my mind via taking the pulse that maybe is not obvious such as one person has a mother and father that are very different to one another and the father "probably" had water (here meaning urinary problem but based in the lung aspect according to my understanding of Chinese medicine) The person in question was "very impress" and although I am yet to build up a knowing that will enable me to make some constructive use out of this in terms of needling and plantmedicines the person defenatly responded well to treatment. Hence one factor when it "happens" that the pulse seam to transmit information global or specific something with regard to the person having their pulse taken and or at least related to them (or they can relate to it) seams to be a very positive therapeutic effect... Placebo you say? Well from my basic CM understanding I would confer that it maybe unblock qi stagnation and calms the shen something very useful indeed... Still I am hoping to one day have some good question to ask Jim and then little by little understand the pulses also ask other people Will and Sean and so forth and read good translations and so on and on... I would be interested in how much is/are pulse phenomena a "social psycho-somatic phenomena"? i.e. could a well versed pulse physician be as well versed in their pulse taking in a unfamiliar environment culturally and linguistically and hence socially? Unfortunately my pulse taking is so basic that I could not possibly begin to "try out this idea" but it would be worth while to consider it at least... Jim: With the wealth of information available in translation today, the foundation is there for pretty much any practice you want to explore. But, like learning a musical instrument, that practice must be recreated in each person. Marco: this idea is super important and super difficult and what makes knowing a living experience but of course all the historical and social and political and linguistically and so forth is with out a shadow of a doubt the reason for this tandem of: practice-experience-contemplation and visa versa and this is now a "circular phenomena where does it begin (where did it begin?) since I have tried to say elsewhere that if Chinese medicine purely was a empirical phenomena the whole world by now would be doing Chinese medicine like the whole world now is doing western science:-) Of course empirical is yet but one part of the so call entity Chinese medicine... bye for now...
