Guest guest
Both this question and the one Holger the Swede asked about "TCM" and "CM" are to me difficult but very valid questions to ask... The "answer" is defenatly within "" because although Chinese medicine is something many times its very strength of being temporal and special dependent both related to the person (microcosms) and the society(ies) (macrocosms). One way is to draw an artificial line between say pre Qing dynasty and late qing dynasty when China became familiar with other continents much more actively (by them and the non Chinese, less I am mistaking) Also another distinction is to draw an artificial line with before 1954 and after 1954... The article "Chinese medicine in Crises" that someone said can be find on the Journal of Chinese medicine web site is great. Also reading Unschuld and Sivin and Knowing Practice By Judith Farquia and Volkers most recent book are excellent for this topic. To me personally the difference is that due to its "in built" infrastructure of the temporal and spatial factors Chinese medicine has tup till now been "self" generating subtle changes and stasis of this process would be painful. For me personally it seams that "contemporary" Chinese medicine is not necessarily TCM and this in turn I do not see as a good verses bad thing. I think "thinking-Contemplating-intepretating" What ever knowledge and knowing base say western medicine Maya medicine and or other social political theories (that are still popular in Guatemala) in terms of Chinese medicine is "Contemporary" CM. For example I have a book which has a photo of a Buda massaging a demon. It is a picture that I can not claim to understand per say but there is indeed something very distinguint in it as opposed to the (and no offence anyone please I am talking Chinese medicine and merely using this as an pointer) Christian mentality represented by those whom I have shown the picture: How can he be massaging the demon? I do not know but I tend to meditate on this picture and also tend to be horrified at the Vermont reaction people here in Guatemala have on seeing this picture... I do not understand it but it has self realising potential (I think or at least feel that for the moment) Hence CM seam to me to also have this "self realising potential", as opposed to tcm (but that is merly my impression). Which by the way I do not understand fully (both CM and TCM and TEAM), and so forth its a constant process and of course nor do I see it as a "bad" thing... I think that someone on another list put it very "American" style and described it as it rocks!:-) If you want the title of the books tell us i.e. the list....
