Guest guest
Just wondering if toxicology modules exist on TCM courses ? If so any mention made of the type of cooking pots & how this may affect the decoction ? Heavy metals (e.g. lead) are used to improve optical qualities and colours of the glass, whilst ceramic glazes made from cadmium have been linked with cases of poisoning because of 'leaching' into the cooking medium. Aliminum cooking pots have been associated with early onset Alzheimers. Iron pots interfere with the extraction of artemsinins (qinghaosu) from qinghao which is used as a 'simple' to treat quinolone resistant malaria in Africa and SE Asia. Preparation instructions on the product are quite clear about avoiding iron pots for boiling up the qinghao (known as sweet annie in the west, or artemisia annua, a family of the wormwood branch known even in the west as vermifuge). There are some ancient texts giving recipes for treatment of 'tidal fever' and 'bone heat' using qinghoa and I am sure there must be reference to the avoidance of iron pots in those old texts. Is not that sort of thing covered in TCM courses' toxicology modules ? Sammy.
