Guest guest
Hello there, I'm a new member and just joined the group. I must admit I'm fairly unexperienced with TCM and therefore have some questions. I'm currently being treated by a chinese doctor in London. I've compared his treatment with my mother's in Munich. My doctor here in London disinfects the part of the skin where the needles is inserted. My mothers doctor doesn't do this. There is also a difference where they insert the needle. My mothers doctor tries different spots to find the one which hurts most based on the theory that this will help most. My London doctor doesn't look for that " painful spot " . What do you think about this? delpino

As your headline says: " different doctors, different treatments " . It will never be exactly the same If you've read some of the letters here you know there are therapists that use " needles " that don't even penetrate the skin, even outside the clothes. Desinfection is a chapter by it's own. I know acupuncturists that say " there is no way for bacteria to enter the acupuncture site " from the skin. (Never seen that proofed but during a period I did not care about desinfectants and I never saw an infection caused by my needling). Some one take up this question? Many acupunturists desinfect by routine and security regulations in their countries (including myself nowadays) . The usual desinfectants alcohol often reduce the immunosystem at the skin level so it is a tricky thing. There are desinfectants that don't damage the skin, i.e. stabilised oxygen. It is actually a much better desinfectant to and does no harm to the skin. IMO these kind of desinfectants should be used instead of alcohol. Sore " points " or not.... why look for them when you know where they are located anyway? Well sometimes the " points " are not located exactly where they are supposed to be located. Or you do " trigger point " therapy, or reflexpoints which has not the same approach as meridian points. There are also other ways of finding the points. Feel the " depression " , feel the " energy " and some doctors " see " the " points " ... or just " know " where they are. In contrast: I have seen not so experienced chinese doctors in chinese hospitals put the needles completely wrong and pretending it was correct. Their mentor doctors would , when noone waslooking, just remove the needle and put it in the right place without mentioning it ( " The nobel art of loosing face... " will take a long time to master in China) The question is not how they do it, but if it works for you? Diabetics shoot them selves daily and most do not disinfect the skin. Even though they are susceptible for infection. I almost never use alcohol if I need to disinfect the skin I use a surgical scrub. Usually when i use large bore needles into periosteum Alon
