The trouble is that security is defined differently by everyone and to think that everyone can have the same definition may well be an illusion too. For instance, one of my ideas of security is to call myself whatever I want. I like Dave. Some of my patients call me Doc. Do I correct them? No. It's easier to remember. The idea is to provide for flexibiity and the advance of a growing and expanding profession. If CO chooses to have numerous titles and confusion for the next 50-70 years until everyone with them dies off, this is ok too. My personal opinion is that after a while, there will be a single title for OM put across by the regulating agencies and the colleges will agree it will not cost them money to do so and thus will not hire lobbyists to oppose the change, and that the academic degree will be DAOM or something similar and the licensure title will be DOM. I may be wrong, but it isn't my decision. I will remain flexible and open, though. The point is to bring the profession to freedom and independence in treating our patients nationally and internationally, for their benefit.
