Hi,

I am new to the board and still have not received any of the posts. So if anyone can help me with the following problem, would you be so kind to email me directly until I can get with the program? Acupunkgina

My problem is:

I am having problems with the patient getting foot cramps when I needle certain points. ST 41 opposite her thoracic outlet problem, and GB 39, same side. Oddly, ST 39 is supposed to be for subsiding cramps. Instead, it triggered them twice. I tried KID 6 which is for foot and hand cramping, and that helped a little. any other suggs?

I would try LV03 + BL18 + GB20 + SP06 + BL20

What is the pattern discrimiation?

She has liver and spleen qi and blood stagnation with a lot of spleen dampness. She was injured 5 years ago (!) and has TOS. Very very sensitive and reacts to traditionally therapies in unexpected manners. For instance, she had some scalene blocks done and instead of relaxing her muscles, she got big knots and horrible pain.

I cannot needle her locally at all without triggering a flrare-up. I can only do distal and Dr. Tan type tx, which work pretty good except for this pesky cramping.

thanks, gh

This may or may be involved with your patient, but sometimes people who have a tendency to emotionally hold on, have a potent emotional event that is stored and the person may protect the release of that event with whatever resources they have.

I would bet this person is resisting releasing something that caused pain in the past. I would do some investigation of past emotional events and see if you can get the person to feel good about the release process.

Just a thought,

Chris

Also, there may be an imbalance in the basic electrolytes. Many people who cramp are very low in Magnesium which is a very difficult mineral to absorb. Suggest the patient takes a couple Epson salt baths before the treatment. The soothing result on achy muscles comes from the magnesium absorbed along with toxins being removed. If there is a deficiency, this or Magnesium sups may help.

2 cents

thanks for the input, both re emotions and magnesium. You are spot on about her emotional holding. I'm sure that's behind a lot of her difficulty. I'll have to explore that more with her. As to the Mg, we have her on supplements of cal/mag, and I have advised the baths many times. I'm sure she forgets about the baths though. Her short-term memory is pretty bad due to long-term pain killer use.

hi,

have you tried CO4,Liv 3 & Ear Shen Men. this i have

found to be agreat calmer.

if this does not work try GB34 that can act as a

muscle relaxant for some.

lets see what results you get.

getting DE Qi is very important. in this pt it should

be minimal as otherwise it can be quite painful

good luck
