The term Yin deficiency can be interpreted in many ways. TCM will help you if

you give it a try, not everyone gets along with the first doctor they try. There

are points for back pain and massage or shiatsu is good too. Good luck.

Hi Ong, and welcome to Chinese Traditional Medicine.

Yin cools, calms, and moistens. (Yang heats, activates, and dries.)

Without sufficient Yin, people feel too hot, have trouble cooling

down, and may be aggitated and nervous, having trouble sitting

still. Night sweats are one of the many possible symptoms of Yin

Deficiency. Heat can damage Yin (just as Cold can damage Yang).

Yin Deficiency is a common problem. I don't know if you can be cured

or not, but you definitely can be helped. Some people are born with

a tendency to Yin Deficiency. They have to pay attention to getting

enough Yin tonic (supplementing) foods and herbs throughout their

lives and avoiding things which injure Yin. This doesn't mean that

they have to see TCM healers regularly for the rest of their lives.

Just that they do exactly what you're doing: Learn all one can about

the condition, what helps, and what aggravates.

In some cases the Yin Defiency developed because the person was in an

environment that was too hot for too long without adequate cooling,

or ate too many Hot foods which damaged the Yin. Foods and herbs have

thermal energy: Cold, Cool, Neutral, Warm, or Hot. For example, dry

ginger is Hot and will heat a person up who consumes it. In fact,

it's classified as an herb to Warm the Intrior (of the body).

Some foods and herbs are Yin tonic (supplementing) in nature. I

believe asparagus is Yin tonic. (The books of Henry C. Lu have a lot

of information on this. You may want to google to find out more.)

In general, vegetables are Yin relative to meat which is Yang

relative to vegetables. (Chinese medicine tends to look at things in

comparison to other things.) The way the food is prepared also will

change its properties. Steaming or stewing foods tend to make them

more Yin whereas frying or baking them tends to make them more Yang.

It's the moisture thing. Yin moistens; Yang dries.

Two of the symptoms you mentioned - back ache and dark circles under

the eyes - suggest Kidney imbalance. The names of Chinese Organs are

capitalized because they are not equivalent to the anatomical

organs. For example, the Kidneys include not only the function of

the kidneys but many of the functions of the adrenal glands. The

Kidneys also have to do with the health of the bones and the teeth.

The Kidneys " open into the ears " . You'd be surprise how often people

with ear or hearing problems have Kidney imbalance.

Any time there are dark tones in the skin, suspect and rule in or

rule out Kidney imbalance. (Greenish tones, Liver imbalance;

yellowish tones, Spleen imbalance.) People who are too Cold (either

because of Yang Deficiency (aka Deficiency Cold) or Excess Cold) will

have complexions and tongues that are pale. (In Yang Deficiency, the

complexion will be shiny pale; with Blood Deficiency it will be dull

pale.) The color red is associated with Heat. If the complexion is

blochy read (also called a " malar flush " ), suspect Yin Deficiency

(aka Deficiency Heat). In cases of Excess Heat (too many Hot foods

and herbs, too much heat in the environment invading and overheating

the body), the complexion tends to be uniformly reddish.

Skin problems can have a number of possible Roots. Exterior Wind

attacking the body and invading, Dampness, etc. The term Exterior

refers to the head, arms, legs, neck, skin, muscles, bones, and

meridians (paths of Qi flow). Interior is the trunk of the body, in

particular the Organs.

The earliest posts in the message base are designed to walk those new

to TCM through the basics. There also is a search function. Please

feel free to ask questions. There are a number of people on the list

who are new to TCM, and some of them have the same questions you do.

I have the same problem and my doctor said it can be cured along with

routine

yearly maininance visits. So far the 6 visits I had removed the dark

circles under my eyes and the yellowing. Also my face was completely

white when I first came in, I now have nomal color. I also have

energy but I lack energy in other parts of me, I guess I need more

meridians worked on.

She and I are pleased that there was such a noticable change. I

would stick

with the treatments and be patient. I don't know if there is a cure

for everyone, depends on what is causing it. I wasn't given any

herbs either.

My acupuncturist said that the Kidney disfunction can be fixed with a

certain amount of visits, I think 8. It is different for everyone.

But to have a visit once a year to keep the meridian open. I eat

healthy so I don't wonder into habits, don't smoke or drink alcohol

or use drugs. I had my 8 visits and feel good. I am still seeing

the acupuncturist because other problems persist with pain in my

ribcage and she removed that Friday with two needles in the back of

my neck, ending with two needles in my lower back, both given moxa

treatment. I think the moxa was the best method to push my system

open. She said this will help my energy also, it did. And I feel it

in a different way.

She ran some blood work to be sure I didn't have some problem within

my organs. But I gather I don't because how well I turned out

Friday. She has some ideas on how to rid me of the ribcage pain but

right now she doesn't know how long that treatment she gave me lasted

or even worked.

She treated me also for neuralgia in my face and relived

constipation. I have been suffering many problems for the past 17

years with yeast overgrowth, metal toxicity, chronic fatigue, food

sensitivities and hormonal imbalance and IBS. I got the yeast under

control before visiting her and the hormonal, IBS and food

sensitivities under control. Now i am left with unexplained pain.

I think when you have all the problems I am having it is not related

to one thing. I am not sure if I answered your question. Hope I

did. 17 years compared to 8 visits with an acupuncturist. Gee! I am

not sure what you meant by stiking to certain habits? Did she ask me

to do anything other than treatments? NO.

So far she fixed half of my problems with 8 visits. Constipation,

fatigue, neuralgia, color in face and I saw an improvement with my

cycle.
