Guest guest
Hi. I am new to the list but excited to have an opportunity to learn from this community. I am a lay student of TCM in my spare time, and may eventually go to TCM school and get my licenses. In the meantime I read a lot, try out different accupuncturists/TCM practitioners, and needle myself and my (so far willing) dog for her arthritis. I recently went to my first actual Chinese accupuncturist. She diagnosed me as low yin/low yang manifesting itself to look like damp heat and a kidney/spleen issues, and needled me. I told her I would like to get pregnant, and have no symptoms to imply that it would be a problem. She gave me three sets of pills - gui pi wan for the spleen and heart, jin kui shen qi wan for kidney/energy/weight loss, and xiao yao wan for the liver/spleen relationship. I have always been VERY very regular in my menses. When I saw this practitioner, I was about four days from my period. It has now been over eleven days and my period still hasn't come. Could it have been something in the treatment or in the medication? In the meantime, I also had an appt with my ob/gyn. She took some blood and reported back that I have slightly low progesterone. Is there something I can do from a TCM perspective to increase my progesterone? Thank you for your help. Franny The New Search - Faster. Easier. Bingo. http://search. Guest guest
Franny, Did your MD rule out pregnancy? Seems like an obvious question, but you never know. It's always the first thing to rule out when you have a missed period. Also, to answer another of your questions, progesterone is directly related to Kidney Yang, so the Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan is good to supplement that. If the levels are very low, there are better formulas and you may also want to supplement with treatments that bring on a " strong ovulation " (ovulation is dependent upon strong Kidney Yang). Good Luck. -Fay --- Franny <mfrancelia wrote: > Hi. > > I am new to the list but excited to have an > opportunity to learn from this community. Guest guest
Fay, that's a great idea and I really wish I were, but I'm a lesbian in a committed relationship and we're going to begin using an anonymous donor later this summer. So if I'm pregnant, that would be about the most surprising development ever. I will ask my TCM about developing a strong Kidney Yang. Thank you ! Guest guest
Wecome to the club. I don't have a liscence but have been studying for decades off and on. I usually only use my knowledge in an emergency situation. TCM is a process of studying and it is good to have a beginners mind sometimes to open yourself to new and better treatments. Needles are fine if used properly, but many a person in China has been treated with a chopstick or end of a burnt jossstick(inscense). Inscense has been used in place of moxa on occasion and it is best to practice on yourself first. I burn or blister is possible this way and more than one practicioner has been socked a good one by this method, it does work however. I have seen the joss stick moxa used in a darkened room, the glow is easier to see that way. Perhaps for emergency only and for experiences healers!! Good luck in your studies, its never too late to learn. Franny <mfrancelia wrote:Hi. I am new to the list but excited to have an opportunity to learn from this community. Guest guest
This is a late response, I've been away from email for awhile (nice to be semi-Ludite for periods of time, ahhhh). I have couple of women I am working with on fertility and regulating menses. I have them chart their Basal Body Temperature (BBT): thermometer under the tongue first thing in the morning before any movement... about the same time each day is best for comparisons. I worked briefly with a Chinese OB-GYN doctor who used this chart for TCM dx. A great tool. First phase from day 1 of menses to ovulation is the YIN Phase (BBT is lower, hopefully by a degree). From ovulation to menses is YANG Phase (BBT is higher by a degree). With pregnancy the BBT increases, and so does prosterone. I have wondered, and assumed correctly or incorrectly, that low progesterone therefore can be supported by tonifying Yang. We are currently working on this, no test results yet to confirm or disprove. At ovulation and menses, Yin and Yang transition/switch. I am not certain what that relationship implies - can only think of Liver keeping the transition smooth (or primordial balance of Yin and Yang from I Ching stories). TX Plan Simplified: if the yin phase is not low enough, Nourish Yin. I've tended to use " Left Kidney Formula " - Zou Gui Wan (which also builds Yang!) unless empty heat signs (Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan). If yang phase is not high enough - nourish Yang. If the BBT line is jagged: soothe Liver (unless waking time is fluxuating significantly - .1 of a degree for each half hour). Establishing the habit of taking BBT at waking is not as hard as imagined. Getting the partner involved is beneficial- they can reach over to hand the thermometer to you and can feel involved with determining fertile times (shake it down the night before if old-style). Important to chart cervical fluids at the same time. There is so much more clues to get out of BBT and charting fluid. The more I look at it and work with it with patients, the more questions we have. This may be one way to address low progesterone. Best wishes, Deb - Franny <mfrancelia <Chinese Traditional Medicine > Friday, May 23, 2003 12:07 PM [Chinese Traditional Medicine] Low progesterone > Hi. > > I am new to the list but excited to have an > opportunity to learn from this community. Guest guest
Dear Nichole, Stay away from Progesterone Creams as these are no more than band-aids that eventually make you dependent upon them. They will never correct the hormone imbalance in your body and will only give temporary relief. The best is the herbal approach. Go to the Files and read my article on "Dead Meat" and "The Myth, and The Mystery". This will educate you about the usual causes of this kind of imbalance. Eventually, the solution will include my Female Formula as in the FILES, Total Nutrition, and some cleansing to bring about a permanent solution.
