I have not looked up all the possible additional herbs.

 

Bob's comment was that Spleen qi deficiency and liver qi stagnation needed

to be addressed for westerners too. Very little adressing the kidneys.

All 52 patients in this study were administered the following basic Chinese

medicinal formula:

 

The sovereigns which level the liver and subdue yang:

Rhizoma Gastrodiae Elatae (Tian Ma), 9g,

Ramulus Uncariae Cum Uncis (Gou Teng), 9g,

 

To enrich and nourish stomach yin:

Radix Glehniae Littoralis (Sha Shen), 15g,

Tuber Asparagi Cochinensis (Tian Men Dong), 9g,

Tuber Ophiopogonis Japonici (Mai Men Dong), 9g,

Radix Trichosanthis Kirlowii (Tian Hua Fen), 15g,

 

To enrich yin and emolliate the liver:

Fructus Lycii Chinensis (Gou Qi Zi), 9g, (wolfberry)

Flos Chrysanthemi Morifolii (Ju Hua), 9g,

Radix Albus Paeoniae Lactiflorae (Bai Shao), 9g

Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae (Niu Xi), 9g,

 

To disperse and abduct as well as transform phlegm:

Semen Arecae Catechu (Bin Lan), 9g,

Radix Et Rhizoma Rhei (Da Huang), 9g,

Semen Cassiae Torae (Jue Ming Zi), 15g,

Semen Raphani Sativi (Lai Fu Zi), 15g

 

These are the ministerial medicinals in this formula.

 

Huang Qin and Huang Lian clear and drain spleen-stomach heat. They are also

able to clear and drain liver-gallbladder fire. These are the assistant

medicinals

 

Radix Scutellariae Baicalensis (Huang Qin), 9g,

Rhizoma Coptidis Chinensis (Huang Lian), 9g

 

Niu Xi also leads fire to move downward. So it is also a messenger or

guiding medicinal. When all these medicinals are used together, they level

the liver and subdue yang, enrich yin and clear heat, disperse and abduct

and transform phlegm.

 

[Q - How does one tell the difference between phlegm heat/fire, and phlegm

damp/plain damp??]

 

 

 

Materi medica references:

 

Level liver subdue yang:

 

Tian Ma - Gastrodia Root

Properties: SWEET - NEUTRAL

Dosage: 3 - 9g.

Meridian: LIVER

POWDER 0.9-1.5g.

-calm liver, clears wind, hot or cold - spasm, tremors, headache, epilepsy

-disperse painful obstruction due to wind damp - numbness, pain, dizzy

 

Gou Teng - Gambir Vine Stem (uncaria?)

Properties: SWEET -COOL

Dosage: 6 - 15g.

Meridian: HEART, LIVER

-clears wind and heat in liver - spasm, tremors, seizures, eclampsia

-drains liver heat, ascends yang - headache, irritable, red eyes, dizzy

-release exterior wind-heat - fever, headache, red eyes

 

To enrich and nourish stomach yin:

 

Sha Shen

Properties: SWEET/BITTER - COOL

Dosage: 9-15g.

Meridian: LUNG, STOMACH

-moistens lungs - non-productive cough

-nourish stomach - generates fluids - clears heat

-moisten exterior - dry itchy skin aggravated by cold & dry

 

Tian Men Dong - Asparagus tuber

Properties: SWEET/BITTER - COLD

Dosage: 6-15g.

Meridian: KIDNEY, LUNG

-moisten lung, clear lung heat, dry mouth-coughing up blood

-nourish kidney Yin, generates fluids - constipation

 

Mai Men Dong - Ophiopogon

Properties: SWEET/BITTER -COLD

Dosage: 6-15g.

Meridian: HEART, LUNG, STOMACH

-moisten lungs - dry cough - coughing up blood

-augments stomach Yin - generates fluid - dry tongue/mouth

-moistens intestines

 

Tian Hua Fen - Trichosanthes Root

Properties: BITTER, SWEET - COLD

Dosage: 9 - 15g.

Meridian: LUNG, STOMACH

-drains lung heat - transforms phlegm - moistens lung dryness

-drains heat, generates fluids - thirst, irritability, cough, thick sputum

-relieves toxicity, expels pus - toxic hot carbuncles, breast abscess

 

 

To enrich yin and emolliate the liver:

 

Gou Qi Zi - Wolfberry Fruit

Properties: SWEET NEUTRAL

Dosage: 6-18g.

Meridian: LIVER, LUNG, KIDNEY

-nourish/tonify liver & kidney - Yin/blood deficiency

-benefits essence - brighten eyes

-enrich Yin - dry lung - consumptive cough (xiao ke)

 

Ju Hua - Chrysanthemum Flower

Properties: SWEET, BITTER COOL

Dosage:4.5 - 15g.

Meridian: LIVER, LUNG

-disperse wind, clear heat - headache, fever

-clears liver - red-painful-dry eyes, excessive tearing, floaters

-calms liver - dizziness, headache, deafness, blurred vision

 

Bai Shao Yao - Peony

Properties: BITTER, SOUR - COOL

Dosage: 6-15g.

Meridian: LIVER, SPLEEN

-nourish blood - regulates menses due to blood deficiency

-calms liver Yang - alleviates pain

-preserves Yin - adjusts Ying & Wei levels

 

Niu Xi - Achyranthes Root

Properties: BITTER, SOUR - NEUTRAL

Dosage: 9 - 15g.

Meridian: LIVER, KIDNEY

-invigorates blood, expels blood stasis

-strengthen sinews/bones/joints

-clears damp heat in lower burner

-brings blood downward

 

To disperse and abduct as well as transform phlegm:

 

Semen Arecae Catechu (Bin Lan), 9g, Buttle nut seed?

 

Da Huang - rhubarb root

Properties: BITTER - COLD

Dosage: 3 - 12g.

Meridian: HEART, LARGE INTETINE, LIVER, STOMACH RAW =

PURGING

-purge accumulations, clear heat from blood, invigorates blood

-drain heat/damp - Yang jaundice

 

Semen Cassiae Torae (Jue Ming Zi), 15g,

Sickle Senna / Cassia Tora

Cold; bitter and sweet and slightly salty; attributive to liver and

gallbladder.

Clear away liver-fire and improve vision; lower blood pressure; lower

blood-fats and relax bowels for chronic constipation

 

Lai Fu Zi - radish/turnip seed

Properties: PUNGENT, SWEET - NEUTRAL

Dosage: 6 - 12g.

Meridian: LUNG, SPLEEN, STOMACH

-reduce food stagnation, transform accumulations (raw)

-caused lung Qi to descend, cough with damp phlegm (dry-fried)

Huang Qin - Baical Skullcap Root - (Scutellaria)

Properties:BITTER - COLD

Dosage: 6 - 15g.

Meridian: GALLBLADDER, LARGE INTESTINE, LUNG, STOMACH

-clear heat, drain fire - upper burner, fever, irritability, thirst, cough

-clear heat, dry damp - stomach - diarrhea, dysentery, thirst with no desire

to drink, lin syndrome, jaundice

-clear heat, stop bleeding - vomit/cough blood, nosebleed, blood in stool

-clear heat, calm fetus - restless fetus due to heat

-clear liver yang rising - headache, irritability, red eyes, bitter taste

 

Huang Lian - Coptis Rhizome

Properties: BITTER - COLD

Dosage: 1.5 - 9g.

Meridian: HEART, LARGE INTESTINE, LIVER, STOMACH

-drain fire, relieve toxicity - high fever, irritability, disorientation,

delirium, painful-red eyes, sore throat, boils carbuncles, abscesses

-clear heat, drain damp - stomach - diarrhea, dysentery, acid reflux,

halitosis, belching

-clear heart fire - irritability, insomnia

-topically - red-painful ulcerations

Spica Prunellae Vulgaris (Xia Ku Cao) 12g

Radix Gentianae Scabrae (Long Dan Cao) 9g

Fructus Gardeniae Jasminoidis (Zhi Zi) were added.

 

Xia Ku Cao - Selfheal Spike (Prunella)

Properties: BITTER, PUNGENT - COLD

Dosage: 9 - 15g. USED ALONE - 30g.

Meridian: GALLBLADDER, LIVER

-ascending liver fire- dry-painful eye, brighten eyes, headache,dizzy

-dissipate phlegm fire nodules - neck lumps, scrofula, lipoma, goiter

-hypertension

 

Long Dan Cao - Chinese Gentian Root

Properties: BITTER - COLD

Dosage: 3 - 9g.

Meridian: GALLBLADDER, LIVER, STOMACH

-drain damp heat from liver and gallbladder - red-swollen-sore

throat/eyes/ears, jaundice, painful-swollen genitals, leucorrhea

-clears ascending liver fire - headache, red eyes, fever, spasm, convulsions

 

Zhi Zi - Cape Jasmine Fruit (Gardenia)

Properties: BITTER - COLD

Dosage: 3 - 12g.

Meridian: HEART, LIVER, LUNG, STOMACH, SAN JIAO

-clear heat, eliminate vexation - irritable, restlessness, insomnia,

delirium

-drains damp heat - urinary dysfunction, constrained liver and gallbladder

causing jaundice

-cools blood, stop bleeding - nosebleed, blood in vomit, dysentery, xue lin

-topically - blood stasis due to trauma, reduces swelling

 

 

If there was constipation, a liking for chilled things and aversion to heat,

a red tongue with yellow fur, and a bowstring, rapid pulse suggesting

stomach and intestinal dryness and heat, 10 grams of uncooked Radix Et

Rhizoma Rhei (Da Huang) were added.

 

If the body was overweight, the head was clouded and unclear, and there was

addiction to sleep suggesting phlegm heat, 15 grams each of Herba Sargassii

(Hai Zao) and Thallus Algae (Kun Bu) were added.

 

Kun Bu - kelp

Properties: SALTY - COLD

Dosage: 4.5 - 15g.

Meridian:KIDNEY, LIVER, STOMACH

-reduce phlegm, soften hardness - nodules in neck, fullness in chest due to

phlegm

-promote urination, reduce swelling - lower extremity edema

 

Hai Zao - Sargassum - seaweed

Antifungal, anti-parasitic, antihypertensive, expectorant, diuretic,

regulates the thyroid, lowers cholesterol levels

 

 

 

If the mouth was dry and bitter but there was no desire to drink, the tongue

fur was yellow and slimy, and the pulse was slippery, suggesting gallbladder

heat, nine grams each of Radix Bupleuri (Chai Hu), Rhizoma Pinelliae

Ternatae (Ban Xia), Herba Lysimachiae Seu Desmodii (Jin Qian Cao), and Herba

Artemesiae Capillaris (Yin Chen Hao) were added.

 

Yin Chen Hao

Properties: BITTER, PUNGENT - COOL

Dosage: 9 - 15g.

Meridian: LIVER, SPLEEN, GALLBLADDER, STOMACH

-clear damp heat from liver and gallbladder, relieves jaundice (yang or yin)

-clear heat, Shao Yang Syndrome.

In Chinese and Japanese medicine, yin chen is used orally to treat

hepatitis, infectious cholecystitis, and hyperlipidemia. Yin chen is used to

stimulate the bile flow, liver, and gallbladder. .. chest constriction,

flank pain, dizziness, nausea, and loss of appetite. In Chinese and Japanese

herbal combinations, yin chen is used orally for jaundice with fever,

urinary dysfunction, constipation, and abdominal distention.

 

If there were heart palpitations, insomnia, and profuse dreams due to heart

yin insufficiency with ascendant heart yang hyperactivity, 12 grams of Radix

Salviae Miltiorrhizae (Dan Shen) and nine grams of Radix Scrophulariae

Ningpoensis (Xuan Shen) were added.

 

Xuan Shen - Ningpo Figwort Root (Scrophularia)

Properties: SWEET, SALTY, BITTER - COLD

Dosage: 9 - 30g.

Meridian: KIDNEY, LUNG, STOMACH

-clear heat, cool blood - bleeding, fever, dry mouth

-nourish yin - constipation, irritability

-drain fire, relieve toxicity - swollen-red eyes, , sore throat

-soften hardness, dissipates phlegm fire nodules - swollen-sore throat

Also Used For:

Orally, figwort is used as a diuretic.

 

Dan Shen - Salvia Root

Properties: BITTER - COOL

Dosage: 6 - 15g.

Meridian: HEART, PERICARDIUM, LIVER

-invigorate blood, break up blood stasis

-clear heat, soothe irritability

-stomach pain
