Guest guest Posted May 4, 2003 Report Share Posted May 4, 2003 The way I was taught was to soak the herbs for half an hour and decoct twice. After I drain off the first decoction, I add water and cook the herbs again. Leaves and flowers as well as aromatic herbs (volatile oils that can boil off very easily) are added toward the end of the first cooking. Some people use a crock pot to decoct herbs. Yes, Mr Chinese doctor agreed that that would be fine - he does not normally suggest it because too few English can be bothered he feels. And guess what - he's just given me some astragalus now!!
