Thanks, Penel. A lot of people don't realize this about shiitakes. You need to soak them in warm water to soften them up first. I chop them up and sometimes add them to the water I cook brown rice in. Sometimes herbs work best for some individuals when used with food. Cayenne in particular is like that for me though the capsules work best for others. The last time I made brown rice I experimented. I usually put curry powder in, but this time I used a little Chinese 5 spice and chicken boullon (plus chives and parsley). It turned out very well.
