Infections (not TC M)

I have found Western alternative medicine particularly good in

fighting infections. Back when I still had an active case of chronic

mononucleosis (glandular fever), I didn't know about TCM and had to

use what I did have. I loaded up on vitamins C and A and the

minerals magnesium and zinc in particular. Actually I loaded up on

quite a few supplements, but those are the main ones for helping the

immune system. I also took a lot of garlic and echinacea. It

worked. I eventually went into remission even though a doctor had

told me I probably never would.

Recently I had a tooth that got infected. It was bad, with that side

of my face swollen up. I wasn't able to see a dentist right away, so

I started taking large amounts of A, C, zinc, magenesium, garlic, and

echinacea. I also used a castor oil pack (fights infection) over

that side of my face. The swelling was considerably reduced by the

next day, and the infection is almost gone. I also feel better

overall than before the infection. (I had slacked off on taking the

echinacea. I used to take it regularly.)

Readers may want to do some research on these supplements. One

approach to healing is to give the body what it needs in order to

heal. Sometimes that may mean large dosages of certain vitamins and

minerals and herbs.

If the person has had digestive system problems/ Spleen imbalance for

some time, this approach may be particular apt. When it comes to

what the West defines as digestive system problems and what TCM

defines as Spleen imbalance, this is an area where the intersection

of Eastern and Western views is particularly relevant.

Consider that the nutrietns your body needs to keep functioning as

well as the Qi are coming from what one eats (and the air one

breathes in the case of Qi). If one's digestive system is messed up,

one is not getting the nutrients (or the Qi) one needs for optimal

functioning. If this has been going on for some time, a snowballing

situation develops. It's easier to explain part of what happens in

Western terms.

The nutrients of the food one takes in provides the building blocks

for everything physical in the body. This includes digestive

enzymes. Without those enzymes or with an inadequate amount, the

food one eats simply does not get digested, and those building blocks

aren't available to make things in the body, including digestive

enzymes. Less digestive enzymes leads to every less food being

digested which means even less building blocks are available to make

digestive enzymes which means that even less digestive enzymes get

make and so on. Something similar happens in the case of Qi. If the

Spleen and Qi are too weak to properly extract Qi from the food and

drink, less and less Qi becomes availaable to the body to extract

Qi. It's a snowballing situation.

Very often, digestive enzymes and amino acids are helpful in cases

where a person has been debilitated for some time. The digestive

enzymes supplementation enables the person to extract more nutrients

from food. The amino acids supplement helps because the buidling

blocks of protein are made available to the body without first having

to be broken down via digestion.

When there has been long-term digestive problems, there frequently is

poor absorption of various vitamins and minerals. Some OTC

medications (like antiacids) and some prescription drugs (like

antibiotics) may even interfere further with digestion and

absorption. In addition, the person may have developed Leaky Gut

Syndrome (LGS), a condition in which the lining of the intestine has

been compromised to the point that things which are not supposed to

be making it across the lining into the blood are (like chunks of

protein, resulting in allergies), and nutrients which are supposed to

be making it across aren't because the " facilitated transport " has

been diminished by the gut lining becoming compromised.

One of the factors that can lead to the development of LGS is the use

of antibiotics. Especially when the person has had to go on frequent

coarses of antibiotics.

There is a link to an article on LGS by Dr. Fratkin in the message

base. The article goes into both Western and TCM knowledge of LGS.
