JIAOGULAN'S ACTIONS

Jiaogulan's Antioxidant Qualities

Oxidative damage to cells is caused by free radicals - unstable oxygen

molecules that are generated in the body as by-products of metabolism. These

free radicals cause damage to cells and tissues which can accelerate aging

processes and lead to chronic inflammation. Studies show that jiaogulan may

help to increase the body's naturally occurring antioxidant, superoxide

dismutase, which helps to protect cells from oxidative damage.

Jiaogulan's Adaptogenic Effects

Adaptogens are tonic herbs that strengthen the body - helping it 'adapt' to,

and deal efficiently with, the stresses it encounters. Adaptogens equip the

body to meet life's challenges by regulating various functions, including

those of the nervous and immune systems. Jiaogulan is considered a very

powerful adaptogen and is thought to have a two-fold effect on the body

whereby it helps to support the body's physical and mental stamina and its

resistance to stress, while helping calm the mind and promote restful sleep.

Jiaogulan's Support of Cardiovascular Function

Research indicates that jiaogulan supports the pumping action of the heart,

thereby helping the heart muscle to pump more easily. The product has been

shown to help aspects of cardiac function. Jiaogulan has also been found to

help maintain the normal viscosity of the blood. Platelet aggregation is the

basis for formation of blood clots and is associated with atherosclerosis,

stroke and heart attack.

Jiaogulan Helps Maintain Blood Pressure

High blood pressure can cause many health problems including serious

complications for the brain, heart and kidneys. Low blood pressure can also

cause health problems such as collapse, fainting and low oxygen levels in the

brain. A number of studies have shown that it is helpful in supporting blood

pressure.

Jiaogulan's Effects on Cholesterol Levels

Some studies have found that jiaogulan has been useful in maintaining normal

cholesterol levels, helping with the LDL/HDL (bad cholesterol/good

cholesterol balance). High LDL levels are associated with atherosclerosis,

whereas HDL removes excess cholesterol and protects cells from LDL damage.

Jiaogulan Helps Support Immunity

Clinical research studies indicate that jiaogulan is effective at helping the

body resist depression of the immune system and may increase the production

of lymphocytes, phagocytes and serum IgG, but not to excess.

Jiaogulan Supports Adrenal Function

The adrenal glands release hormones that are essential for body functions.

The inner medulla produces adrenalin, which gives us the instant energy we

need in emergencies ('fight or flight' response). The outer cortex produces

hormones essential for daily survival, regulating metabolism, blood pressure

and sugar levels. It also produces a small amount of sex hormones. Excessive,

chronic or continual stress leads to overstimulation of the adrenals,

eventually draining them. Regular use of jiaogulan may help restore and

revitalise tired adrenals, increasing the capacity to handle stress and

boosting energy levels.
