One of the interviews I did when working with Ramsey Survivors

Support Group was with a young military wife who was bothered by

vailum. She had been prescribed valium because her severe back pain

was misdiagnosed as due to anxiety. This diagnosis was made in spite

of the fact that in addition to the severe back pain, she also was

having periods that lasted two months at a time, she was gaining

weight, and she was growing hair on the face.

She took two 10 mg valium tablets out of the new prescription because

she was in such pain from her back, and her doctor had assured her

that they would stop the pain. She had a very bad reaction to the

valium which necessitated her being transported by ambulance to the

military hospital at Ft. Huachuca. Once there, the ER doctor made

her reaction to valium out to be a suicide attempt even though only

two pills were missing from the bottle. It obviously wasn't a

suicide attempt.

The doctor in the ER put pressure on her to enter the local for-

profit psychiatric hospital. He made it sound like her husband's

military career would be harmed if she did not go to the facility.

(It should be pointed out that one way for-profit psychiatric

hospitals have gotten patients is the paying of " boundies " to

doctors, school nurses and counselors, social workers, and even

ministers to send them patients. The practice is called " bounty

hunting " . We do not know if the doctor was getting bounties for

patients referred or if he was just ignorant.)

While in the for-profit hospital she believes she was covertly

drugged and raped. (Which is not only possible but highly probable

considering the number of sexual assaults by staff on patients as

well as patients on patients at this particular facility. The

Cochise County sheriff's department finally got to the point where it

went in and removed one such patient who was preying on others.)

When she eventually got out of the for-profit hospital, she saw a

different doctor, one who did not misdiagnose her severe back pain

and other problems. She suffered from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

I can't understand how the first doctor could possibly have not

considered this given those periods and the hair on the face as well

as the severe back pain and weight gain.

One website you may want to check out (if it still exists) is the one

with the information from the congressional report The Profits of

Misery: How Inpatient Psychiatric Treatment Bilks the System and

Betrays Our Trust. It's very depressing though enlightening reading.

Yes, people can react to valium and other drugs in that class.

One other class of drugs that people need to be warned about are

antihistamines. Whenever a person is having an anxiety or panic

attack, one of the first questions should be, " Are you taking any

antihistamines? " Anxiety and panic are very common reactions to

antihistamines, but most people (even many doctors) do not realize

this.

Sometimes the person can tolerate some antihistamines (in very low

dosages), but not others. Sometimes the person will not be able to

tolerate any antihistamine, and other approaches to controling

allergies will have to be found. BTW, allegies are increasing in the

U.S. in part due to poor diets (and from a TCM standpoint, weak

Spleens).

Exposure to copper can be a trigger for schizophrenic episodes in

some individuals. One of the first things that more " primitive "

cultures do when a person displays schizophrenic symptoms is to take

away any jewelry or tools made with copper that the person has.

At one time a special type of kidney dialysis was showing promise

with some cases of schizophrenia. I haven't heard else about it in

years.

I'll try to post some about TCM syndromes that can underlie Severe

Mental Illnesses. Rosa N. Schnyer and Bob Flaws wrote a book Curing

Depression Naturally with , Blue Poppy Press, ISBN 0-

936185-94-5. Other readers may be able to post links to websites that

go into more detail on mental illnesses and TCM.

For those new to TCM, the earliest posts in the message base will

walk you through the fundamentals of TCM. There also is a search

function which will allow you to find posts about specific topics.
