The following is from The Foundations of , Giovanni

Maciocia, p. 259.

On the relationship of Liver Yin and Liver Blood Deficiency and

Kidney Yin Deficiency (listed under " Kidney- and Liver-Yin

Deficiency " ):

" Ths pattern includes symptoms and signs of both Liver- and Kidney-

Yin deficiency, bearing in mind that Liver-Yin deficiency embodies

Liver-Blood deficiency. The Kidneys correspond to Water and should

nourish the Liver, which corresponds to Wood. " (Some 5 Element theory

here.) " Thus the Yin and Blood of the Liver are dependent on the

nourishment of Kidney-Yin and Kidney-Essence. "

On p. 260, Maciocia goes into the etiology of Kidney- and Liver-Yin

Deficiency:

" This is the same as for Kidney-Yin deficiency and Liver-Blood

deficiency, but with the additional component of emotional problems

due to anger, frustration and depression.

" This pattern may also develop from Liver-Blood and Liver Yin

deficiency. "

In other words, if Liver Blood Deficiency (which is embodied in Liver

Yin Deficiency) goes on long enough, it can trigger Kidney Yin

Deficiency. Maciocia doesn't have a separate entry in Foundations

for just Liver Yin Deficiency. (I believe untreated Liver Blood

Deficiency which eventually triggers Kidney Yin Deficiency is an

example of " Son robbing Mother " (5 Elements Theory). Water (Kidneys)

is the " mother " of Wood (Liver).)

Or, Kidney Yin Deficiency can trigger Liver Yin Deficiency. The

Kidneys supply the Yin (and Yang) for the rest of the body. If the

Kidneys don't have it to give, the Liver (and other Organs) won't get

it. The Liver is especially vulnerable because " Water generates

Wood " . (5 Element theory). When Kidney Yin is in short supply, one of

the first Organs to feel the pinch is the Liver. Since not only Liver

Yin but Liver Blood also is dependent on there being enough Kidney

Yin and Kidney Essence (Jing), in time Liver Blood Deficiency also

will develop.
