Guest guest
QiGong (pinyon spelling from modern China) is also Chi or C'hi (spelling from pre-revolutionary China and modern Taiwan) is also Ki (spelling from modern Japan). Qigong is between 2000 - 4000 years old, perhaps originating from India. It is likely that today's yoga has the same roots as qigong. One branch traveled the Silk Road, probably before Buddhism to East Asia and grew under the influence of Taoism and Confusionism. The other branch stayed in India with ayervedic medicine and then traveled east to European countries. (I am not very familiar with yoga beyond this.) The second character, " gong " = 'labor', incorporates a carpenter's square. This shows how mental focus, precision, discipline and dedication that can create beauty and perfect balance: health, spiritual awareness, mental well-being, strength, energy, ... QiGong is all about working your own qi. Be aware if someone says you need them to do qigong. Tho' healing qigong can be used by a experience practitioner (as yet, fairly unusual in the west) to 'work' your qi. Best is if you learn a form so that you can do it for yourself. And best if you learn with a teacher who can give corrections. Some corrections, however subtle can make a significant difference. There are several websites with information about qigong forms and teachers and books. More and more schools have qigong teachers on staff with classes available to the public. All the old and great Chinese doctors also studied qigong. BTW, my qigong teacher was diagnosed with breast cancer and given 3 months to live. That was over 7 years ago. She started studying qigong in the parks in China on a daily basis and is still going strong. Using Medical Qigong to complement western medical treatments for critical illnesses or cancer usually requires a very serious commitment. I know this is alot of info, and there is more out there. Good luck!
