drug induced brain damage

Can anyone tell me if acupuncture (or any other alternative

medicines and therapies) works for people who have brain damage

resulted from long term abuse of cough mixture and sleeping

pills?

I have a client, who has a history of abusing cough mixture and

sleeping pills, has recently been diagnosed by a psychiatrist to

be suffering from a X (name forgotten) Disease which is very

similar to autism but the onset of the disease is usually not in

early childhood so that it is difficult to detect. It is said

to be induced or triggered by drug abuse sometimes. People

suffer from this disease cannot communicate with other very well

and they have difficulties to follow rules and regulations.

The psychiatrist expressed that my client was in need of

residential training to improve his communication with others

and to learn how to follow rules and regulations within a group

setting. The psychiatrist also said that he was in need of

cognitive training which I don't know what exactly it is. Yet,

no medication and psychotherapy was given.

The psychiatrist insisted that nothing could be done to him

before he completed a residential training programme. Actually,

he had already been admitted to a drug rehabilitation centre for

a month but he was discharged there due to his unsatisfactory

performance there. He failed to get along with other residents

thereof and broke the rules and regulations repeatedly. I think

it is unlikely for him to be able to complete similar training

and the case now turn to be a deadlock.

The psychiatrist refused to render any other therapeutic means

to improve his condition. The psychiatrist also refused to

explore any relevant alternative healing methods. I suggested

that he could be referred to psychological treatment by a

clinical psychologist who might help in the so-called cognitive

training but was turned dowm by the psychiatrist who emphasized

that research findings concluded that people suffering from X

Disease could not be benefit from counseling and psychotherapy.

Any advice or opionions for me?

Fanny
