For what it's worth, my bachelor's degree was in Psychology from UW-Madison. I enjoy finding parallels between the study of the mind, the body, and the study of both through TCM. Dr. Richard Ferber, a psychologist renowned for his work with children's sleep disorders, determined that the human biological clock actually functions on 25-hours. The fact that our bodies operate on 25 hours, while the planet is on 24 hours, is believed to contribute to some of the disorders seen in psychological avenues. Just an interesting 2 cents to plug into this thread... :)

Re: [Chinese Traditional Medicine] Digest Number 575

Hello Marcos,I meant that the TCM observation of exact two hour cycles for body organs, as is taught by many schools, is arbitrary (body organs probably roughly follow this system, but I doubt if there is a stop watch in the body which is precise down to the minute and second). In other words, this twelve hour organ clock is a way of organizing what has been observed by some ancient TCM practitioners to treat illness with some sort of precision, but I do not believe it can be precise down to the minute and second for each body organ. In this sense I feel that just as the hours, minutes and seconds are assigned to a twenty-four hour day by human observation of the earth's rotation, this too, is an arbitrary way of assigning some sort of order and meaning to that which might otherwise be confusing and chaotic ( it allows us to organize our lives into some kind of meaningful albeit linear sense). Anyway, even the way we have organized time is not exactly precise--therefore we have a leap year as a way of keeping this 24 hour day system running smoothly. Just as we now are gaining an understanding of time as truly being nonlinear, I feel that what Al is sharing here is another way of understanding TCM treatment which is somehow layered over the twelve hour meridian clock, but does not necessarily exclude its usefulness. Hello Marcos,

The times of the organs are from the astronomy/astrology part of

TCM. and have to do with the correspondence of the Yin and Yang

predominating during the day/night. It's not arbitrary at all

and was made through observation and experience.

Thanks, Jessica. Does he have any suggestions for correcting the

imbalance?

Dear Victoria and all,

I don't think this is an imbalance. This seemingly physiological cycle was

found in healthy grownups in experiments, where people stayed for a while in

underground rooms without clocks and away from daylight. They could sleep,

wake, do whatever they wanted (away from daylight) within their own time - don't

know whether they interacted much with each other. But in the end they more

or less leveled in on a 25 hour " day " .

Still, the fact that lots of us with a regular life style tend to wake up 5

minutes before the alarm clock suggests that we somehow managed to adapt to

our earth turning once in a cycle we count in 24 hours... ;)

Just my 1 1/2 pence.

Best regards from Germany

Rebecca :)
