The 5 possible Roots of urinary frequency are Urinary Bladder Damp

Heat, Kidney Yin Deficiency, Failing Kidney Consolidation (Kidney

Yang Deficiency), Lung and Spleen Qi Deficiency, and Liver Qi

Blockage.

Urinary Bladder Damp Heat:

" Frequency, urgency, burning and pain with urination, which is

scanty, yellow, and cloudy; accompanied by characteristic symptoms of

Urinary Bladder damp-heat such as dry mouth with little desire to

drink, sensations of lower abdominal fullness and distension,

difficult-to-pass yet not dry stool, (or alternating dry and loose

stool), red tongue with a greasy yellow coat, and a rapid slippery or

rapid soft (ru) pulse. " Fluid Physiology and Pathology in Traditional

, Steven Clavey, p.95.)

This is an Excess Heat condtion (as opposed to the Deficiency Heat of

Kidney Yin Deficiency). Excess problems are those which are caused by

there being too much of something. In this case the " too much " may be

a pathogen (virus or bacteria) or due to the consumption of too many

foods and herbs which are Hot and Damp-engendering. Blockage of Qi

also can cause Heat. (Think of a pressure cooker.)

Damp Heat has a strong, foul odor. This is urine that smells

immediately or shortly after voiding. (The strong, foul odor ofren is

a sign that one is dealing with Damp Heat instead of with other forms

of Excess Heat or with Deficiency Heat.)

Also note the greasy yellow coat. Greasy tongue coats indicate

Dampness is present. Thick tongue coats indicate that the problem is

one of Excess whereas a thin tongue coat is normal or present in

cases of Deficiency. In the case of Yin Deficiency the coat will be

extremely thin or even absent. Red tongues and yellow coatings

indicate Heat. Yellow urine also indicates Heat. Both Urinary Damp

Heat and Kidney Yin Deficiency will present with yellow urine, but

the urine in cases of Urinary Damp Heat will be much darker than the

urine in cases of Kidney Yin Deficiency.

Some of the key symptoms that one is dealing with a case of Urinary

Damp Heat will be the sensation of " lower abdominal fullness and

distension " as well as the " urgency, burning, and pain with

urination. "

Urinary Bladder Damp Heat - like so many of the possible causes of

frequent urination) also can result in incontinence. In the case of

Urinary Damp Heat, there is a rapid onset of the the need to urinate.

In extreme cases one minute the person doesn't have to go to the

bathroom and the next the person has to go. There's little warning.

Accidents happen. " Relatively rapid onset of urinary incontinence

with scanty, dark and only dribbling urine, pain and burning in the

urethra with voiding, lower abdominal distension and discomfort,

bitter taste and dry mouth, red tongue with a greasy coat, and a wiry

rapid pulse. " (Clavey, p.99.)
