Guest guest
Greetings, fellow TCM members. After coming off of a bad few months in college, where I got into binge eating to handle stress, I find it hard now to stop. I don't have the same stress anymore, especially after getting into doing a lot of Nei Kung, but still, about 3 times a week, I get this huge craving for sweet, fatty, and salty unhealthy food that seems totally unrelated to hunger. I still very much enjoy simple foods like brown rice with nothing but a little sesame oil and raw veg/fruit, but less so when the craving hits. For some reason also, I don't feel hungry much anymore for more than a few minutes. When I try to satisfy the craving for the unhealthy foods, (I feel a total repulsion to healthy stuff when it hits) I never seem to feel full. In fact, I can't remember the last time I really felt " full. " I don't know . I often get the feeling of distension and nausea after eating too much, but for some reason I feel like I could always choke down a significant amount more. Another thing--I'm very thin and don't seem to be gaining any weight from this. I also am not fatigued (sleep only about 5.5 - 6.5 hrs./night---Nei Kung is terrific), seem to urine quite frequently even without need of much water, and often have cold limbs and extremeties even in summer. Does this sound like a certain symptom of something? I'm willing to provide more information if necessary.

College can be extremely hard on the body. The stress of deadlines, the late hours, the eating on the run and eating out of vending machines, etc. Binge eating sometimes can be a way of desperately trying to get something the person needs. For example, I have been guilty of substituting food for rest. I reach for something to keep me going longer when what I really need is rest. Needless to say I'm Qi Deficient. That's my way of temporarily boosting Qi enough to keep going. It's a bad habit. Unfortunately, the foods that are available and are reached for often are at best poor substitutes for the food (herb, rest, etc.) the person really needs. Hence, the person rarely feels full and satisfied. So why are sugarly, salty, and fatty foods so often the ones craved when there are imbalances? Part of the reason is that different tastes have an affinity for different Organ systems. The sweet taste has an affinity for the Spleen (which plays a major role in Qi production). The salty taste has an affinity for the Kidneys. Some TCM kidney formulas will direct the person to take the formula with some salt as the salt will " guide " the formula's effects to where it is most needed - the Kidneys. > I don't > have the same stress anymore, especially after getting into > doing a lot of Nei Kung, but still, about 3 times a week, I get this > huge craving for sweet, fatty, and salty unhealthy food that seems > totally unrelated to hunger. You may not have the stress any more, but the imbalance has been triggered and never corrected. Think of a row of dominos going down. The hand that pushed the first one down is no longer there, but the cascade has started. Distension and nausea can be symptoms of Spleen Deficiency. The distension also can be Qi Stagnation. It's interesting that you used the phase " choke down " . This also indicates possible Qi Stagnation problems as well as possible Rebellious Qi problems (Stomach Qi rising when it should be descending). > Another thing--I'm very thin and don't seem to be gaining any > weight from this. I also am not fatigued (sleep only about 5.5 - > 6.5 hrs./night---Nei Kung is terrific), Do you waken frequently during the night or every 2 or 3 hours? Do your have problems falling asleep? Is the energy you have a nervous energy? Any feelings of agitation? > seem to urine quite > frequently even without need of much water, The frequent urination often is a symptom of Kidney Yang Deficiency, but fatigue is present in those cases. Do you rarely feel thirsty and prefer hot soups when you do consume liquids? The bad thing about cases where the person isn't feeling thirsty when s/he should and is not consuming enough liquids is that it can lead to Fluid Deficiency and then to Blood Deficiency. > and often have cold > limbs and extremeties even in summer. This too can be Yang Deficiency One exercise to try is to get relaxed and ask your body what it really needs. Sometimes the person will just know, sometimes images may appear in the mind, or dreams may point to what the person needs. I'm hoping others will reply to this message too and give their input. Guest guest
Being in TCM school all we ever joke about (and not-joke about) is how much damage we are doing to our Spleens. Overthinking and worrying are the 'negative' emotions affecting the Spleen. And, like Victoria said the other major signs point to Yang Xu. I also like to suggest to people that have been stressed to learn about their adrenals and endocrine system. Guest guest
I get this > huge craving for sweet, fatty, and salty unhealthy > food that seems > totally unrelated to hunger. I still very much enjoy > simple foods one of the reasons I like the most chinese medicine is because wealways are in condition to feel whwt we needs the same for our patients all what we need to taste is what need in general terms in this case sweet and salt express deficiency in kidney and spleen. In my opinion eating healthy is to be honest oneselfwith our necesity i use to say that main problem is what we eat but our imposibility to stop eating when foodis what we like the most. nevertheless so often in modern times we force our body to eat healthy by eating > like brown rice with nothing but a little sesame oil > and raw > veg/fruit, even when > For some reason also, I don't feel hungry much > anymore for > more than a few minutes. or When I try to satisfy the > craving for the > unhealthy foods, (I feel a total repulsion to > healthy stuff when it > hits) instead of that I never seem to feel full. In fact, I can't > remember the last > time I really felt " full. " I don'know . because satisfaction is produced whever we eat anything we need those things unnecesary we try to avoid them even when they are healthy, hence in my opinion we should fight for getting control of our self being free insteas of victims of our desires I often > get the feeling of > distension and nausea after eating too much, but for > some > reason I feel like I could always choke down a > significant amount > more. This express spleen qi is unable for transport and transformation that is why I'm very thin and don't seem to be > gaining any > weight from this. in other tems when it says I also am not fatigued (sleep only > about 5.5 - > 6.5 hrs./night---Nei Kung is terrific) this suggestt to things there is deficient of Xue in charde of supporting Shen or there is bad distribution of Xue because of Qi deficientcy . , seem to > urine quite > frequently even without need of much water, and > often have cold > limbs and extremeties even in summer. that means that Kitney qi is unable to control liquids and sending back to liquids metabolism at the same time is unable to control urination. Therefore in this case there is deficiency of Qi for warming the body that is why it feels cold everytime Does this > sound like a > certain symptom of something?
