Here's a quick question..... when I am undergoing acupuncture,

generally most points get the " grab " effect and a slight jolt

sensation, but some, they feel like a strong jolt/funny bone-ish.

For instance my situation is roughly weak spleen qi, dampness and

slight heat (seems like heat and cold are on the fence), last night

my TCM doc needled PC6 (I think) on both arms and it was a strong

jolt, most of the way up my arm down to middle finger. He said he

was using those to try and help balance me off.

What is the signifcance, if any, when the points feel that way, as

opposed to just the grab/light jolt? What does the stronger " jolt "

mean? Bad or good generally? Were the gates and blockage blown open,

or did he just happen to hit a nerve on each arm? :)

Just curious, I had a similar discomfort on SP3-4 (not sure which),

and he said that when you are weak (spleen in this case)it is

sometimes more sensitive, also SP3 or 4 just tends to be a little

sensitive for ppl anyway.

So what does it mean when theres a stronger " rush " feeling when the

point is hit, if anything at all?

Thanks,

Curtis

Funny thing -- when my doc needled PC6 on me a month or so ago, I had the

exact same reaction. Must be a nerve around there.

Yeah, that one's called the median nerve. I don't like to needle PC6

too deeply since that nerve is so needleable. Fortunately however,

nerves are surrounded by a really slippery covering that usually allows

it to slide out of the way when a needle is poked into it.

The question of what is Qi sensation and what is nerve sensation is not

something I can answer with too much authority. I can say that the dull

achey feeling is usually Qi and violent electrical sensations might be nerves.

The only real specific way of knowing what you're poking is if its Qi,

the sensation will dissipate in a few seconds. If you've needled a

nerve, the sensation will last minutes. At least this is what I learned

in my needling technique class.
