Guest guest
This is not TCM but one of those things that can be important. Muscles need magnesium in order to be able to relax properly. Without adequate Mg, the muscles will stay contracted. This is one reason for the fatigue that often is seen in cases of Mg deficiency. When muscles stay contracted, this is very tiring. This is also one of the possible reasons why chiropractic or D.O. treatments or even massages don't last on some people like they should. Because Mg is deficient, the muscles stay contracted. In some people this can pull the alignment of the spine (and other bones) back out of alignment. The treatments don't last like they should. Cold also can do this. The nature of cold is to cause everything (except for water) to contract. Some people are so sensitive to cold that the muscles contract and stay contracted to the point that bones are pulled out of alignment. In these cases Protective Qi often is Deficient. Protective Qi circulates at the surface of the body and warms and protects it against Exterior Evils (like cold). For the science buffs on the list: Cold causes the movement of molecules and atoms to slow down. It also causes things to solidfy. Water has a unique property in that as it changes from a liquid to a solid (ice), it will expand and become " ligher " . This property of water is what makes life as we know it possible on this planet. As water starts to freeze in streams and lakes, the lighter ice forms at the suface. Beneath the layer of ice, fish and other life still exist in the water. If bodies of water froze uniformly - instead of lighter ice forming at the surface - many rivers and lakes that do thaw in the warmer months would never thaw out. They would remain frozen in the depths and only the surfaces would thaw out. But because ice " rises " and forms at the surface and the depths remain liquid, these rivers and lakes do thaw during warmer months. A good school science project for kids to demonstrate that water expands as it freezes is to fill a plastic container completely full of water and put it in the freezer. Do NOT use glass, only plastic containers. As the water freezes, it expands and will crack the plastic container. This is why when one puts cans or plastic bottles of soft drinks in the freezer and forgets they are in there, when they finally are retrieved, the cans are deformed and the bottles have burst.
