" Dizziness, numbness of limbs, insomnia, blurred vision, 'floaters' in eyes,

scanty menstruation or amenorrhoea, dull-pale complexion, pale lips,

muscular weakness, muscle spams, cramps, withered and brittle nails, dry

hair and skin. "

The tongue will be pale colored - especially on sides. But if the Liver

Blood Deficiency is particularly bad, the sides may be orange-colored. The

tongue will be Dry. (Unless there are some other problems like Kidney Yang

Deficiency and/or Spleen Qi Deficiency.)

" Pulse: Choppy or Fine.

" Key symptoms: blurred vision, scanty periods, dull-pale complexion, Pale

tongue. "

Maciocia, The Foundations of , p. 224.)

For those new to TCM: The Liver " opens into the eyes " . For this reason,

suspect and rule in or out Liver imbalance whenever the eyes or sight is

affected. People who have a lot of problems with their eyes and vision

often will be found to have a Liver imbalance. The Kidneys " open into the

ears " , and people with a lot of ear and hearing problems often will have

Kidney imbalance.

" The Liver stores Blood and any deficiency of Blood oten manifests in the

Liver sphere. As the Liver opens into the eyes, when Liver-Blood is

deficient the eyes will lack nourishment and moisture so that they cannot

see clearly. "

" The Liver controls the sinews and when Liver-Blood is deficient these will

lack nourishment and moistening and the person will experience muscular

weakness or cramps. " (Note: The TCM definition of Blood is that it

nourishes and moistens the body and its tissues.)

" As the Liver manifests in the nails, when Liver-Blood is deficient they

will lose nourishment and become withered and brittle. " If the person's

nails are in horrible shape - splitting, has ridges, etc. - suspect and rule

in or rule out Liver Blood Deficiency.

The Liver supplies the Directing (Conception) Vessel and the Penetrating

Vessel with Blood, so if Liver Blood is Deficient, it can't properly supply

the Conception and Penetrating Vessels with Blood, hence the scanty or no

periods. (The Conception Vessel and the Penetrating Vessels are two of the

8 " Extraordinary " meridians (pathways of Qi flow). The Conception (aka

Directing) Channel runs up the midline of the front of the body. There are

also the 12 main meridians - Liver, Gall Bladder, Heart, Kidneys, Spleen,

etc.)

Treatment principle " " Tonify the Liver, nourish Blood. " (Maciocia, p. 225.)
