Guest guest
The general rule is that thick tongue coats = Excess, and thin tongue coats = normal or Deficiency. But what about those cases where there is both Excess and Deficiency? Since the Stomach primarily is responsible for the tongue coat (though the Spleen and Kidneys also can play roles), the condition of the Stoamch often will take precedent. For example, what about a person with Stomach Yin Deficiency and Liver Qi Stagnation? The tongue coat usually will be absent, reflecting the Yin Deficiency of the Stomach. In conditions where a Deficiency problem has led to an Excess problem - like a Deficient Spleen allowing Dampness to accumulate (Excess), the tongue coating usually will be thick.
