Guest guest
Long-time readers know that I suffer from Kidney Yang Deficiency. I got to the point this spring that I was feeling so good that I stopped taking a lot of my supplements. By summer I had stopping taking everying except for magnesium. I skipped that a lot of days. Consequently, when it turned drier here, I came down with the first cold I've had in years. (I definitely should have stayed on the astragalus which supplements Protective Qi. And I should have used a humidifier when it turned so dry.) Anyway, although I recovered fairly quickly from the cold, I began to lose ground in other ways. It was a gradual process. In between it being so gradual and my wanting to be in denial, I got to the point where I was having to sleep a lot once again. (This can be a symptom of Yang Deficiency.) It also became harder and harder for me to do things. What energy I had I was using making repairs to the house. A lot of days I didn't feel like doing anything. As I said, I slept a lot. I finally went back on the supplements. I'm starting to improve - less need for sleep, more energy and alertness when I am awake, sensitivity to cold decreasing, etc. But it is taking some time to build back up. During the summer I had the Yang energy of summer helping me out. But as it turned drier and then cooler here, I no longer had that support from the environment. And what was happening to me sneaked up on me. Kidney Yang Deficiency - by its very nature of slowing one down mentally as well as physically - can do that to a person. In addition to feeling so good, another reason I stopped with some of the herbs was they were too warming back during the spring. What I should have done was either to cut the dose and take them only occasionally or start back as soon as it got drier here. But I not only cut out the herbs with warm energy; I cut out everything except for the magnesium because I was feeling so good. I should have been more mindful. I've suffered from Kidney Yang Deficiency for years. I probably was Kidney Yang Deficient as a child because I can remember hating cold weather and having problems warming up even back then. In any event, when a person has suffered from a condition such as Kidney Yang Deficiency for many years, the person may need to stay on Yang tonic herbs forever. Or at least be prepared to start back on them at a certain point in the year. Kidney Yang Deficiency by its nature can sneak up on a person.
