Dampness: Strengthen the Speen which is in charge of the transportation and

transformation of fluids.

If there is Phlegm, Dampness has been going on for some time. If there is

Phlegm, there usually are other factors at work too. There are different

types of Phlegm and combinations of factors that can engender Phlegm.

Are the Dampness and Phlegm worse in one part of the body than in other

parts? For example, the Lower Burner (lower abdomen). If so, you are also

looking at Qi Stagnation problems. And the question which came first - the

Qi Stagnation which is allowing the Dampness to accumulate or the Dampness

which is triggering the Qi Stagnation? Both will need to be addressed, but

in some cases knowing what triggered what will allow one to fine-tune

treatment and be more successful.

The Kidneys and the Triple Burner frequently are involved in Fluid pathology

and Phlegm. I'm preparing some posts on this but had to take a vacation

from the board for some other things.

It is possible for people to suffer from both Dryness and Dampness at the

same time. This can happen, for example when there is Dampness in the Lower

Burner but Heat in the Lungs or the person lives in a desert area. In these

cases the Phlegm in the Lungs may be Dry Phlegm or Heat Phlegm. (Spleen

Deficiency also will be present.)

The treatments for Phlegm can be complex. Often the best treatment involves

not attacking the Phlegm directly (with Phlegm transforming herbs) but

correcting the underlying imbalance. Phlegm with a factor of Kidney Yang

Deficiency (Cold Phlegm) is a prime example. The Kidney Yang Deficiency has

to be treated in order to resolve the Phlegm. The Phlegm transforming herbs

like even Pinellia can be too much for the person and even create other

problems. The Kidney Yang Deficiency has to be concentrated on first.

Rebellious Qi can be a factor in Phlegm formation in some cases. It goes

without saying that Sinking Spleen Qi may be involved in some cases as

Spleen Qi Sinking is a type of Spleen Deficiency. In some fairly rare

(thankfully) cases a person may suffer from both Rebellious Qi and Sinking

Qi. For example, Stomach Qi is Rebelling (flowing upward when it should be

descending) but Stomach Qi is Sinking (descending when it should be

ascending).
