Hi Lauren.

I just recently (this morning!) started up some forums at

acupuncture.com in hopes to answering the questions that you're asking.

Mostly all that is there is some generic advice that I've written down.

You can comment as you chose, or others can.

I don't suggest one school over another, but simply highlight some of

the things to keep in mind.

Please see:

http://acupuncture.com/phpreactor/htdocs/forums/browse.php?fid=20

I myself attended Emperor's and feel very positive about the experience.

I think that what everyone must do is check out the student population.

If you like them, stay there. If not, keep looking.

Lauren,

I am currently attending the American College of Acupuncture and

Oriental Medicine. They require 60 hours of undergraduate hours as a

prerequisite. It is a full time four year program in which you will

receive your Masters of Science in Oriental Medicine. The school is

in Houston, Texas and has a widely-used clinic available to the

public on-site. The program seems to be rather rigid, and so far

none of my classes have been geared just to passing the licensing

exam. They do not have a specific science level requirement before

taking their anatomy and physiology, which I understand are some of

the most difficult classes there. Students arrive from all over the

world to attend this school. The majority of the doctors are either

Western M.D.'s or D.O.M.'s. If there is any information that I can

check on for you in regards to this school, please feel free to ask.

It would be my pleasure.

Hi Lauren:

I am currently studying TCM at the American College of TCM in San Francisco.

I was required to complete the pre-requisites you mentioned in order

to begin the Master's program here. The reason for that is so you will

be able to understand the complex scientific theories behind western

pathophysiology so that you will not only be able to treat patients who

are seriously ill, but also so you will be able to communicate with western

doctors about such patients.

I feel that although many of the acupuncture schools offer the prerequisites

on-site, you will get a better education and " more for your money " if

you were to take these credits at a university. Especially classes such

as Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, Psychology. Where I go to school,

the pre-requisites offered here are nowhere near the caliber of excellence

as the ones I took at a regular university, or even a community college.

Wherever you choose to go, understand that a completely thorough knowledge

of anatomy and physiology is absolutely essential to getting the most

out of your education and becoming a great acupuncturist.

good luck!
