The reason I ask is that sometimes certain medical conditions tend to occur together. For example, families and individuals in which certain thyroid imbalances are present also tend to have greater than normal rates of pernicious anemia, Addison's disease, allergies, some forms of arthritis, myasthenia gravis, dyslexia, vertiligo (white patches on the skin), and premature graying. These things tend to occur together in greater than normal frequency. (Your Thyroid: A Home Reference by Lawrence C. Wood, M.D., F.A.C.P., David S. Cooper, M.D., F.A.C.P., and E. Chester Ridgway, M.D., F.A.C.P.) It's not known why these things tend to occur together in individuals and families, just that they do. Knowing that certain conditions tend to occur together can give healers a little extra insight and a little more diagnostic ability. For example if a person comes into one of these doctors who is prematurely gray and has muscle weakness or has a genetic relative with certain thyroid disorders, one of these doctors automatically is going to wonder about the possibility of myastnenia gravis and rule in or out. A doctor who is not aware of these statistical connections might take a lot longer (if ever) to realize s/he's seeing a case of M.G.
