Guest guest
Is there any particular food or supplements that help to support and strengthen the conception vessel? I took an acupressure course a while ago, but they don't have any of that kind of information for the " extra " meridians. For the others I have the list of colors associated with the meridian, time of day it is active, etc.

Guest guest
Each of the yin organs is paired with a yang organ to achieve a balance in the body. Each of these pairs share a common element, tissue, sensory organ that they control, a color, climate & emotions they are affected by etc.. Lung/Large Intestine - tissue = skin/hair, sense organ = nose, color = white, sound = weeping, emotion = sadness, taste = pungent. Stomach/Spleen - tissue = muscles, sense organ = mouth, color = yellow, sound = singing, emotion = worry, taste = sweet Heart/Small Intestine - tissue = blood vessels, color = red, sound = laughing, emotion = over-joy, taste = bitter Urinary Bladder/Kidney - tissue = bone/teeth, sense organ = ear, color = black, sound = groaning, emotion = fear, taste = salty Pericardium/Sanjiao - tissue = blood vessels, sense organ = tonge, color = purple, sound = laughing, emotion, over-joy, taste = bitter Gall Bladder/Liver - tissue = tendons, sense organ = eyes, color = green, sound = shouting, emotion = anger, taste = sour ________ Get your FREE personalized e-mail at http://www.canada.com
Guest guest
>Is there any particular food or supplements that help to support and >strengthen the conception vessel? I took an acupressure course a >while ago, but they don't have any of that kind of information for >the " extra " meridians. For the others I have the list of colors >associated with the meridian, time of day it is active, etc. I checked my books for this one and couldn't find any direct information. But I did find some implied information. The important thing to remember about the Conception Vessel (aka Ren, aka Directing Vessel), the Governing Vessel (aka Du), and the Penetrating Vessel are that " All these three vessels originate directly from the Kidneys and flow down to the perineum (at Huiyin Ren-1) from where they take different pathways: the Directing vessel flows up the abdomen along the midline, the Governing vessl up the back and the Penetratingh vessel up the abdomen along the Kidney channel. These three vessels can be seen as the source of all the other extraordinary vessls as they originate directly from the Kidneys and are therefore connected to the Essence. They, more than the other extraordinary vessels, can be used in clinical practic to affect the patient's energy at a deep constitutional level. " (Maciocia, The Foundations of , p.356.) (In a way the Penetrating Vessel could be said to be the origin of the other 5 Extraordinary vessels. Maciocia, p. 360.)) In many ways the 8 Extraordinary meridians are like a system of dams and irrigation channels. They are a place for energy to go when it is blocked in one of the main channels (like drainage ditches that can absorb extra water from a heavy rainfall and prevent flooding (Maciocia, p. 355)), but they also can release energy to the 12 main meridians when they are lacking in energy (like in hte case of shock (Maciocia, p. 355). The 8 Extraordinary vessels also circulate Essence (Jing) around the body, " thus contributing to integrating the circulation of Nutritive Qi with that of the Essence. " (p. 355) In addition the Governing, Conception, and Penetrating Vessels " circulate Defensive Qi over the thorax, abdomen and back. " (p. 356) In other words they play a role in how much resistence the person has to external Evils. The Conception and Penetrating Vessels " regulate the 7 and 8 year cycles of women's lives and men's respectively. " (p. 356.) The Conception and Governing Vessels are the only two of the 8 Extraordinary meridians to have their own unique points - like Conception Vessel 6, Governing Vessel 4, etc. The other 6 Extraordinary meridians " share " points with the 12 main meridians or the Conception Vessel. For example, the Opening point of the Penetrating Vessel is Spleen 4, the Coupled point is Pericardium 6, and the starting point is Conception Vessel 1. (For those of you new to TCM, think of streets and avenues with intersections. Usually a person who lives on the corner of Main Street and Mimosa Avenue will take Main Street to get home. But if traffic is unusually clogged on Main Street, the person may take Mimosa Avenue to get home. The 8 Extraordinary meridians are alternative routes that " cross " the 12 main meridians.) The reason I'm going into detail here about the 8 EMs is that usually they're used to treat imbalances in other meridians and in Organs in the body. For example, because the Conception Vessel is the " Sea of the Yin channels " , points on it can be used to nourish Yin anywhere in the body. Likewise, the Governing Vessel is " the Sea of Yang channels " and can be used to influence the Yang channels and strengthen Yang in the body. Usually we speak of imbalances in other parts of the body, not in the EMs, and the EMs are used to treat the imbalances in the main meridians and Organs. For this reason, we usually don't speak of colors or times of day being associated with EMs. But like so much in TCM, sometimes there is a two-way relationship between the EMs and the main meridians and Organs. Sometimes there can be a problem in the Governing, the Conception, or the Penetrating Vessels which is impacting on the main meridians and Organs, and these three EM channels have to be addressed directly instead of just being used to influence the main meridians and Organs. The main things that can go wrong is insufficiency of Essence (Jing) and Blood in the Conception and Governing Vessels, and Deficiency and Cold in the Conception and Penetrating Vessels. The former is seen after very long and very debilitating chronic illness (and we're also talking some major Kidney Yin and Yang, especially Yang, Deficiency here as well as not enough Essence and Blood in the Conception and Governing Vessels). The latter can be connected with all kinds of reproductive system problems. There are Materia Medicas which list EMs targeted by herbs. I don't have one of these. I do have the Chinese Herbal Medicine Materia Medica by Bensky and Gamble which lists cinnamon twigs, aka Gui Zhi, aka Ramulus Cinnamomi Cassiae) - which is an herb that warms the Exterior - combined with Fructus Evodiae Rutaecarpae (aka Wu Zhu Yu - an herb for warming the Interior and expeling Cold) for " abdominal pain, dysmenorrhea, and menstrual irregularity due to cold from deficiency in the penetrating and conception vessels. " (p. 30.) Cinnamon bark (aka Rou Gui, aka Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae - also classified as an herb for warming the Interior and expeling Cold) is combined with Dang Gui (aka Radix Angelicae Sinensis) and with Radix Ligustici Chuanxiong (aka Chuan Xiong) " for dysmenorrhea or amenorrhea due to cold from deficiency of the penetrating and conception vessels. " (p. 302) Rhizoma Cibotii Barometz (aka Gou Ji - a Yang tonic herb) is combined with Cornu Cervi Parvum (aka Lu Rong - velvet of young deer antler - another Yang tonic herb) for vaginal discharge from cold deficiency in the Conception and Penetrating channels. " (p. 349) Someone else on the list may know if there are any guide herbs for the Conception Vessel. (A guide herb is one that will direct the actions of other herbs to a particular meridian or Organ.) Some of the acupunturists may know of points to use for Cold due to Deficiency in the Penetrating and Conception vessels. In general, I imagine that any food which is good for the Kidneys is going to benefit the Conception, Governing, and Penetrating Vessels since they originate in the Kidneys. Some of the foods which tone up the Kidneys are black sesame seed, string bean, sword bean, wheat, and kidneys. (Henry C. Lu, Chinese Natural Cures, p. 281.) (Note: I would be careful of the wheat because wheat is a Damp-engendering food. Very often when certain Kidney imbalances are present, certain Spleen imbalances also are present, and together the two can create some severe edema problems due to water not being properly transported and transformed. Some cases of the " addictive allergy " that some people have for wheat may be cases where the individuals are Kidney Deficient and are craving wheat as an unconscious way to tonify the Kidneys. Unfortunately because wheat also is Damp-engendering it can end up doing more harm than good in cases where there also is Spleen Deficiency.) Herbs which benefit the Essence should also be considered. Sorry for so much detail, but I needed to establish for those new to TCM just how different the Extraordinary meridians are, and how they're different. I also needed to underscore that it is the nature of the problem that determines the correct herb. For example, both fenugreek seed (aka Hu Lu Ba, aka Semen Trigonellae Foeni-graeci) and privet fruit (aka Nu Zhen Zi, aka Fructus Ligustri) have an affinity for the Kidneys and the Liver. But fenugreek seeds are a Yang tonic herb and are contraindicated in Yin Deficiency whereas privet fruit is a Yin tonic herb which is contraindicated in Deficiency of Yang. But what about cases where both Yang and Yin Deficiency are present - which is usually the case when the Kidneys are Deficient in one? Use them both in a formula provided the other criteria for the herbs also are present. Whenever there is dual Kidney Yin and Kidney Yang Deficiency, one will always predominate. In fact, one can be so much more severe than the other that it can mask the symptoms of the other. Use more fenugreek seeds than privet fruit in the formular for a person who is predominately Kidney Yang Deficient. Or, add another Yang tonic herb to the formula. If the Kidney Yin Deficiency predominates over the Kidney Yang Deficiency, use more privet fruit in the formula than fenugreek seed, or, add another Kidney Yin tonic herb.
