Guest guest
One thing that is puzzling to many Western medical doctors is why some people with CFIDS or with chronic or recurring mononucleosis suffers from constant low grade fever and others from below normal body temperatures. Because of this, some believe these patients have different illnesses. They don't. They're in different stages of the 6 stages of Cold-induced Evils. The first 3 stages are characterized more by fever and feeling hot than by cold (though there is an aversion to cold in the TaiYang Exterior substage and alternating fever and chills in the ShaoYang stage). The Yin stages tend to be characterized more by feeling cold easily and by below normal body temperatures (with the exception of ShaoYin Deficiency Heat substage and JueYin parasitic substage in which frequently the lower body is cold and the upper is hot). How do you tell if you're dealing with an unresolved case of Cold-Induced Evils or " simple " Yang or Yin Deficiency or some other TCM syndrome or a Western-defined medical condition such as hypothyroidism? By the history. People stuck in one of the 6 stages of Cold-induced evils will report that their problems began with a viral infection or they were never the same after a viral infection. In my own case (CFIDS and recurring and then chronic mono) I made the comment, " I came down with mono-induced hepatitis 6 months after gall bladder surgery, and I was never the same after that. " (Note: Some cases of both hypothyroidsim or hyperthyroidism may be triggered by an infection or an autoimmune response.) In aome cases other TCM syndromes exist before the Cold-induced Evil, and the person may be more inclined because of this pre-existing weakness to become stuck in a particular stage or move rapidly to it. In my case, the lower than normal body temperature was correlating to how sick I was. The lower my body temperature went, the sicker I was. I don't know if the lower than normal body temperature was causing the feeling and being sicker or if my worsening health was causing the further drops in body temperature, but the two definitely were occuring together. The important thing to remember is that very often when it's a case of an unresolved Cold-induced Evil the person will report that his or her problems began with a bacterial or viral infection or s/he was never the same afterwards.
