Guest guest
One thing I was not clear about in the previous post is that extreme depression is likely to result whenever a person stands by and watches hurtful and unfair things being done to others without doing what the person is capable of doing to stop the abuse and/or exploitation or even voicing an objection to the hurtful acts. Habitually ignoring issues of conscience like this can result in one of the most profound depressions there is. No amount of herbs or acupuncture or drugs are going to remedy this particular depression. This one is going to take a combination healer, therapist, and priest/ess coupled with the person being willing to face some very hard facts and finding courage. This depression has a strong spiritual component. In this case " spiritual " is not limited to any particular religion or dogma but has to to do with one's most basic relationship to others, to oneself, and to the idea of what is greater than oneself. This also has to do with being true to oneself, especially what is best or could be best in oneself. To say that these individuals don't like themselves very much is an understatement. Because of the habitual ignoring of conscience and empathy, there can be a very profound self-hating and self-loathing to the point eventually of seeking total annihilation of self. Because the person has cut him/herself off emotionally from others, from the web of humanity, and from caring, a psychological and spiritual state is reached in which nothing has any meaning.
