First, the general textbook info on the symptoms and signs of Blood Stasis:

There is a darkening of the complexion, the tongue, the nails, etc. This

can range from subtle to very pronounced. The tongue is purple -

bluish-purple in the case of Cold, reddish-purple in the case of Heat.

Maciocia reports the pulse will be Wiry, Firm, or Choppy. (Foundations, p.

193)

Blood Stasis is associated with pain which stays in one location and is

boring or stabbing (in contrast to Qi Stagnation pain which tends to wander

and wax and wane in intensity and be dull).

Maciocia reports the Liver is the most likely Organ to be affected by Blood

Stasis though the Heart, Lungs, Stomach, Intestines, and Uterus frequently

are affected. (p. 193)

The exact symptoms will vary according to the Organ affected.

Blood Stasis is one of the possible Roots of menstrual dark blood clots.

Some tumors or other growths are due to Blood Stasis. Recurring hemorrhages

sometimes can result from Blood Stasis preventing proper Blood flow.

Maciocia lists the following possible etiologies for Blood Stasis:

" 1. Stagnation of Qi: this is the most common cause of stasis of Blood. Qi

moves Blood, if Qi stagnates Blood congeals.

" 2. Deficiency of Qi: deficiency of Qi over a long period of time may cause

stasis of Blood as Qi becomes too weak to move Blood.

" 3. Heat in the Blood: Heat in the Blood may cause the Blood to coagulate

and stagnate.

" 4. Blood deficiency: if Blood is deficient over a long period of time, it

will induce Qi deficiency and subsequently stasis of Blood, from impairment

of the Qi moving function.

" 5. Interior Cold: this slows down the circulation of Blood. " (The

Foundations of , p. 194.)

My note: In regard to number 4, Blood Deficiency, be aware that wrinkled

skin can be a symptom not only of dehydration and/or Yin Deficiency but

Blood Deficiency, especially when seen in a diabetic or an older person.

The arms and legs usually are affected first. The skin will look wrinkly

like a prune or like a person has lost a lot of weight. If the person is

skinny to begin with, the person now looks emaciated.
