Guest guest
Hello. My name is Lauren and I'm new to the group. From what I've been reading the past few days, it seems as though many members of this group are practitioners of TCM or at least pretty experienced in the ways of TCM. I have a two-part question: First of all, I am NOT experienced at all in TCM, but hope to be soon. I am currently looking for schools to attend for a degree in TCM and acupuncture. It is something that I've always wanted to learn about. Can anyone give me some recommendations on schools in California? Right now, based on the research that I've been doing, I'm leaning toward the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in San Diego, or Five Branches Institute in Santa Cruz. Does anyone have feedback on these two schools, or can suggest other schools that I should look into? I'm also wondering about Santa Barbara College of Oriental Med. Should I be wary of a faculty that doesn't seem to have many asians? Part two: I have psoriasis. Not too bad, just on the elbows, knees, scalp, and knuckles. When I lived in San Francisco a couple of years ago, I went to a Chinese doctor down the street from my apartment. He gave me a week's worth of herbs to take as tea and they seemed to work great--the scales on my skin were definitley starting to disappear. There were a lot of herbs in each dose, some that i recognized in the Chinese herb shops, and some that i didn't, and of course i never got the prescription from him. Anyway, I couldn't continue seeing him because I was broke at the time. He told me that acupunture would benefit me the most--he could clear up my skin completely. But, as I said, I didn't have the money at the time. Can anyone recommend an herbal treatment? Is acupuncture really the way to go? I'm 27, I've had proriasis for 8 yrs now and am getting tired of it. I've done the steriod ointment, the UV light treatments, you name it, and the only time I felt good about my skin was when i was taking the tea. If anyone has any info on health insurance that covers acupuncture and " alternative " med , it would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long posting. This frequently is used as a text in many acupuncture schools. By reading it early, you can get a headstart. If your local library doesn't have a copy it can order the book for you on interlibrary loan. In some library systems this is a completely free service, in others you have to pay book postage. Also, Foundations is one of those Chinese medicine books that some state and private universities have copies of in their libraries. >Part two: I have psoriasis. For the benefit of those new to TCM, it is common for herbalists to give only a week or two weeks or at most a month of herbs at a time. This is because a part of TCM is to reevaluate frequently and adjust according to the person's current needs. TCM recognizes that clinical pictures change, and treatment needs to change to match the new picture. >Can anyone recommend an herbal treatment? Is >acupuncture really the way to go? And please share what you learn here. >I've done the steriod ointment, the UV light >treatments, you name it, and the only time I felt good >about my skin was when i was taking the tea. Sometimes it's amazing what an herbal tea can do for a problem. I've known that sense of amazement. Which is why I began to learn all I could about TCM.<G> Victoria _______________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

I can tell you about CA schools, but keep in mind that it is only opinion. I believe that you should check them all out and gravitate toward the school with the student body that feels the most familiar to you. All the schools are similar, though the bigger ones are generally better, I think. There's a long list of them at acupuncture.com. In my mind, there are a few dominant schools. San Diego has PCOM The LA area has Emperors, SAMRA and Yo San. The bay area has ACTCM Santa Cruz has Five Branches Also, I think that The Web that Has No Weaver is a great book to read prior to beginning your education. Maciocia's text is full of stuff that you may never use, but the Web is pretty good for really understanding the big picture. Hope that helps. -al. -- Al Stone L.Ac. <AlStone http://www.BeyondWellBeing.com Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.
Guest guest
kinda off topic. kinda on topic! : i'd check out pacific or 5 branches...they are both awesome...santa cruz has more beach life i think... anyway...psoriasis is caused from leaky gut. i have a case right now and am doing wonders with the pt. look up leaky gut on the net...and change your diet! you need to identify ALL food allergies AND sensitivites... i use muscle testing... you can do that or get a blood test pannel ... shop around for someone who can find your allergies/sensitivites... most are wheat, corn, dairy, peanuts, chocolate, coffee...but the list is huge ..since ANY food can be the culprit... anyway...best of luck...and while youre at it...IMPORTANT... check two other things out... 1. www.edgarcayce.org and look up psoriasis....you need to take american saffron tea to heal your snall intestine...along with milk thistle, glycothymoline and lecithin every day! 2. check out http://www.psoriasis-healing.com/ and get his book!!!...these are a must..you can lick this condition if you do these things!!!! this is not medical advice, or treatment or diagnosis....its just my opinion...so take it or leave it...good luck!
