She was an internist and allergist. She had a computer that had metal probes attached to it. She would place these probes on acupuncture points ... the computer would then chart blockages in energy flow. It did give information on foods that were causing problems, metals in the body, all kinds of things. She swore by it ... stating that it helped her tremendously with some of her more difficult patients, even helping her to save a man from having to endure a liver transplant. Unfortunately, she lost her medical license because of it. At least that's what appeared to be the case. I know the law suit imposed on her revolved around it's use. I suspect that they are not " approved " . From my perspective, I don't believe that it helped me that much. I made gradual improvement under her care but am not convinced that this device had anything to do with it. I believe that it may be accurate, but without fully understanding it's implications, treatment would fall short. My doctor did not have any background in Chinese medicine, therefore could not possibly be able to utilize the information to the best of her ability. Just my opinion. This is just one of the reasons why doctors and all acupunturists need a background in TCM. If something like this does work, the healer is not going to be able to begin to get the full use of it without at least a basic background in TCM. At the very least healers should be able to do a TCM tongue diagnosis and a bare basics TCM pulse diagnosis. I try to be realistic. Becoming really good at pulse diagnosis can take years. In the meantime, what is possible for healers? The bare basics of TCM pulse diagnosis. By this I mean start with what is easiest to learn and start using that. The easiest consideration is slow vs. fast pulse. A fast pulse usually indicates Heat in the body (unless the person is obese, dehydrated, has certain breathing problems, etc.). A slow pulse usually indicates Cold in the body (unless the person is a well-conditioned athelete). Start with what is easiest to learn and start using that. Then master something else. Step by step. The next step might be floating vs. sinking. A floating pulse is one which is felt the most strongly with the least pressure. Increase the pressure on the wrist, and the pulse weakens. Let up on the pressure and the pulse gets stronger. A floating pulse usually indicates attack by an Exterior Pernicious Evil (though if it's also weak it can indicate Yin or Blood Deficiency, or if strong, can indicate Interior Wind). A sinking pulse is one which can be felt the strongest with the most pressure on the wrist. Let up on the pressure, and the pulse feels weaker. Increase the pressure, and the pulse gets stronger. A sinking pulse indicates an Interior problem. So far you're learned two pairs: Fast tends to mean Heat and slow tends to mean Cold, and floating tends to mean Exterior and sinking tends to mean Interior. Does these two pairs remind readers of something? The most basic of the TCM analysis approaches, the 8 Principal Patterns (Hot/Cold, Exterior/Interior, Excess/Deficiency, and Yang/Yin.) The next step might be to learn weak vs. strong. Most healthcare professionals have an idea of what weak and strong pulses feel like. Weak and strong have a special definition in TCM. A weak pulse is one that can only be felt at one level of pressure. Let up on the pressure or increase it, and the pulse disappears. In addition, it may be hard to feel at any level. A strong pulse is one that can be felt clearly no matter how much pressure is applied though it may be strongest at one pressure. In general, a weak pulse points to Deficiency and a strong pulse points to Excess. There are some finer points to interpreting a weak pulse than a strong pulse, but these will come with experience and practice. >transplant. Unfortunately, she lost her medical license because of it. At >least that's what appeared to be the case. I know the law suit imposed on >her revolved around it's use. I suspect that they are not " approved " . This is another reason for MDs and DOs to learn pulse and tongue analysis. They don't have to worry about a piece of equipment being approved or unapproved for use. They quietly can gather information while performing tasks that MDs and DOs routinely perform: Taking the pulse and looking at the tongue. It's just that they're gathering more information than MDs or DOs usually gather and are able to make better use of their observations. I also want to point out that in the past Western MDs were far more sophisticated about pulses than they are today. Back in the days before modern medical equipment, doctors became very sophisticated about qualities of pulses. This was taught plus got developed in the course of a medical career. Modern medical equipment can be a godsend and help save a lot more lives than would be saved, but only if the healer doesn't overrely on the equipment or allow it to get between her/him and the client. There is also is a lot to be said for developing one's powers of observation and developing faith in oneself and one's abilities. Only then can the best use be gotten from the equipment.
