I also will be addressing specific questions from both lists at the same time. This is why my comments may not make sense to people on one list. They're addressing questions raised by someone on another list. One of the important things to consider is if it's Type I Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM) or Type II Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM). TCM and other alternatives are more effective with Type II NIDDM than Type I IDDM. TCM and other alternatives can totally manage SOME cases of Type II NIDDM. In the case of Type I Insulin Dependent Diabetes, TCM and alternatives almost never are effective enough alone. The person is going to have to have insulin in addition to the alternatives. What TCM and other alternatives can do in many of these cases is lessen the dose of insulin required and the frequency of having to take the insulin. TCM and other alternatives most definitely can lessen and in some cases even eliminate entirely the other problems usually associated with diabetes - things like the vision problems, the circulation problems. It should go without saying that if one is a diabetic of either type, one is going to have to work with one's doctor on this in addition to working with an alternative healer or exploring alternatives on one's own. Stopping the insulin or drugs cold turkey is a definite no-no which can land one in a hospital ER or worse. In the case of Insulin Dependent diabetes, the person in all probability is going to have to remain on insulin though over time the dose may be reduced as the person's overall health improves. But a doctor will have to be worked with in order to determine if 1). the alternative treatment has been successful and 2). the insulin can be reduced. If the person is on drugs for NIDDM, the person will need to be monitored by his/her doctor while using both the drugs and the alternatives. Also, this is not a situation where one stops the prescription drugs and immediately goes on alternatives. The alternatives are phased in slowly while the prescription medicine is phased out slowly WHILE UNDER A DOCTOR'S SUPERVISION and provided the alternatives are working.
