Guest guest
John My father was diagnosed as diabetic three years ago. The western dr wanted to place him on an oral and manage it with diet but told him that he would eventually be on insulin (his sugars were well over 300) My parents decided not to go that route and went to see a DO with chinese medicine training. Both doctors told him the testing reflected that he had been diabetic for approximately two years, without his knowledge. There is a family history. The D.O. treated him with chinese herbs (nothing else) he told my father that he hoped to see a decrease in the sugars in 6 months. Believe it or not: in 6 weeks the sugars were back in normal range, they discontinued the herbs after 8 weeks and now they can find no signs of the diabetes in any of the tests. I might add that he is not on a special diet at this time and has not been for 2 years. The D.O. told them that it is a common belief that diabetes cannot be cured but he has had several cases that have been. The D.O. told my parents that diabetes is rather difficult to manage with acupuncture. Just my two cents Shane

He maintains that if kidney function is supported and strengthened that the heart function will be protected no matter how high the sugar goes. Some of his patients he is able to get off medication (it depends on how much pancreatic function rema
Guest guest
>I would like to know how do we treat diabetic patient in terms of >physical manipulation... which acupoints should we concentrate on? It's going to vary according to the clinical picture. Not all cases of diabetes mellitus are the same from a TCM standpoint. For those new to TCM, Western-defined medical conditions rarely correspond to TCM syndromes. For example, the breathing problems which are called asthma in the West may have one or more of several different TCM Roots. What helps one asthmatic may do nothing for a second and even hurt a third because there are different TCM Roots in different asthmatics. Having said that, modern Chinese medicine calls diabetes mellitus Sugar Urine Disease. In the past, many cases of diabetes fit under the category of Wasting and Thirsting Syndrome. Note: Not all cases of diabetes/ Sugar Urine Disease are Wasting and Thirsting Syndrome, and not all cases of Wasting and Thirsting Syndrome are diabetes. There is, however, a great deal of overlap. I will be forwarding in some links for diabetes information. For the sake of simplicity, the three-part article concentrates on diabetes cases that do conform to Wasting and Thirsting Syndrome. Treatment is going to vary according to which of the 3 P's are emphasized in the individual - polydypsia (excessive thirst), polyphagia (excessive hunger), and polyuria (excessive urination). Polydypsia is associated most with Upper Wasting and Heat in the Lungs. Polyphagia is associated with Middle Wasting and the Stomach (Fire). Polyuria is associated with Lower Wasting and the Kidneys. In addition, all cases of diabetes mellitus will differ from an Organ perspective. Lynn M. Kuchinski in Controlling Diabetes Naturally with lists " seven basic disease mechanisms of diabetes " . These are 1. Stomach Heat Exuberance, 2. Liver Depression Qi Stagnation, 3. Yin Vacuity (Deficiency), Fire Effulgence (Yang too active because of Yin Deficiency and turns to Internal, Destructive Fire), 4. Qi and Yin Dual Vacuity (Deficiency), 5. Yin and Yang Dual Vacuities (Deficiencies), 6. Blood Stasis, and 7. Water Dampness Accumulating Internally and Congealing Into Phlegm. Acupoints will be chosen based on which basic TCM patterns are present (i.e., Liver Qi Stagnation, Liver Invading Stomach, Stomach Fire, Kidney Yin and Kidney Yang Deficiency, Qi Deficiency and weak Spleen, etc.). If the diabetes also conforms to Thirsting and Wasting Syndrome, points will be selected according to Upper, Middle, and/or Lower Wasting being emphasized.
