Guest guest
Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency. " Swallow complexion, dull occipital or vertical headache, insomnia, dream-disturbed sleep, numbness of limbs, malar flush, dizziness, dry eyes, blurred vision, propensity to outburst of anger, soreness of the lower back, dry throat, tinnitus, night sweating, feeling of heat of palms and soles, difficult-dry stools, nocturnal emissions, scanty menstruation or amenorrhoea, delayed cycle, in women infertility. " Tongue: Red-Peeled, cracked. " Pulse: Floating-Empty or Choppy. " Key symptoms: dry eyes, dry throat, night sweating, scanty menstruation, Red-Pelled tongue. " Giovanni Maciocia, The Foundations of , p.259. Note the reference to " dull " occipital or vertical headache. The quality of pain also is a clue in TCM. In general, sharp pain have Excess conditions as a Root, and dull pain have Deficiency conditions as a Root. (There are exceptions; this is a general rule.) The pain of occipital headaches due to combination Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency is described as " dull " . Another clue as to the Root of pain comes from the effect of pressure on the painful area. If pressure or even touch makes the pain worse, chances are the pain is due to an Excess condition. If pressure or touch makes the painful area feel better, chances are it's due to a Deficiency condition. For example, if a client comes in massaging an area of the body with force or gripping the area, chances are the pain is due to Deficiency. If a client shrinks from the lightest touch to the area, chances are the pain is due to an Excess. Please note that it is possible for pain to have both Excess and Deficiency Roots. For example, the headaches I had. The Exterior Wind Cold invading the Bladder channel is Excess, but I was prone to this because of Kidney Yang Deficiency. In cases like this, indicators may be mixed. For example, the pain I had was sharp, but pressure (massage) to the area *around* the worst pain helped. I couldn't apply pressure to the area of worst pain, but pressure to areas of less pain around the area of greatest pain helped. Problems due to Deficiency are due to there not being enough of something - Yang, Yin, Blood, Qi. Problems due to Excess are due to there being too much of something - too much Cold, too much Heat, too much Phlegm, Blood Stasis, or Qi Stagnation, etc. (Any Phlegm, Blood Stasis, or Qi Stagnation is too much.)
