Guest guest
First I want to point out there are many possible Roots of PMS. Only one of these is Yang Deficiency. The following is taken from Curing PMS Naturally with by Bob Flaws, pp. 118-119) " As we have seen above, most women's ynag qi begins to decline by around 35 years of age. In women over 35 years of age, most premenstrual fatigue, loose stools, lack of strength, poor memory, lack of concentration, poor coordination, decline in or lack of libido, low back and knee soreness and weakness, increased nighttime urination, and cold hands and feet are due to this decline first in the yang qi of the spleen and later in the yang qi of the spleen and kidneys. When many woman say they are depressed, what they mean in Chinese medical terms is that they are extremely fatigued. In such cases, sunbathing can help supplement the yang qi of the body, thereby strengthening the spllen and /pr kidneys. " Furthermore, because the yang qi is also the motivating force which pushes the qi, increasing yang qi can also help resolve depression and move stagnation. Cao Ting-dong, a famous doctor of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911 CE) wrote: " Sitting with the back exposed directly to tyhe sun, the back may get warmed. This is able to make the entire body harmounious and smoothly flowing. The sun is the essence of tai yang and its light strengthens the yang qi of the human body. " In Chinese medicien, whenever the words harmounious and smoothly flowing are used together, they refer to the flow of qi and blood. Hence sunbathing can help course the liver and rectify the qi as well as fortify the spllen and invigorate the kidneys. " Flaws goes on to caution that sunbathing be done only between the hours of 8 to 10am - unless one lives really far north. There also is a caution against sunbathing for too long at a time. I want to add another caution. There are some people (like some people who suffer from CFIDS and others as well) in which UV radiation will cause congestion of capillaries. In these cases, the sunlight may trigger Blood Stasis and Qi Stagnation. People sensitive to UV radiation causing congestion of capillaries need to use sunlight therapy very cautiously or not at all. Some people may benefit from say a couple of minutes very early in the morning whereas longer exposure at a later time of day could trigger problems. Some may not be able to tolerate even a couple of minutes very early in the morning. (The capillaries are the smallest of the blood vessels. Some capillaries have diameters slightly smaller than red blood cells. This is why it is important that red blood cells be flexible and properly shaped. Otherwise, circulation problems result. Misshapen, inflexible red blood cells are called nondiscocytes. High percentages of nondiscocytes are found in a number of medical disorders, including diabetes. The highest percentages have been found in people with CFIDS. Vitamin B12 promotes the formation of healthy, flexible, properly shaped red blood cells. For more information on nondiscocytes, see the research of L.O. Simpson, a MD in New Zealand.) In addition, some prescription drugs and some herbs will cause sensitivity to the sun, so one wants to make sure one is not on one of these before using this therapy. Flaws goes on to state that " some Western researchers are coming to understand that exposure to light does play a role in many women's PMS. " (p. 119) (He doesn't give footnotes for this.) I would add this is espeically worth considering if the PMS is worse in winter months than in summer months. But cold also may be a factor in these cases which are worse in winter than in summer.
