hello-

I'm currently a student of TCM and am wondering if anyone can help me

figure out this problem:

My stepson is 4 1/2 years old. He doesn't suck his thumb, rather he sucks

on his forearm. He has been doing this since age 1 (before I knew him)

and has developed a nasty raw bump on his arm. At first glance, it looks

like an enlarged mosquito bite, but upon closer inspection it appears

to be a self-formed nipple on his arm! The psychological implications

are many: his parents divorced around (his) age 1, his lives mostly with

his father and myself, his mother going away for months at a time. Of

course he has security issues, and he is treated gently. Until I stepped

into the picture, the arm sucking was not an issue. All involved parties

were completely complacent, afraid of " rocking his boat " too much with

the stress of an unstable family situation.

3 1/2 years have passed, his family situation has stabilized. His mom

has settled down a bit and sees his every other weekend and on holidays.

His father and I have been living together with him for just over a year.

The question is how to make him stop sucking? We have tried putting

nasty-tasting

stuff on the arm. This works from moment-to-moment, but then he sucks

while at school, or simply wipes off the ointment while we aren't looking

and sucks again. Explanations of healing, needing strong arms for playing

sports and working have had little effect on his need to suck. He knows

he needs to quit doing it, but just can't help himself.

Can TCM or acupuncture do anything for him? He has had needles and cupping

before, but only under ill health conditions. Most people I've asked

say " therapy, therapy, therapy. " but how does this work for a young family

with a tight budget? Are there any herbs, acupressure points, ointments,

etc. that anyone could recommend?

I appreciate your help!

Ruby Mae,

I have not seen any responses to your question about your step son. I would assume this is due in part to the nature of the problem. I have never heard of this type of behavior however it does appear more emotional to me. I would suggest looking at some of the Worsley materials. He is 5 element and there really seems to be an emphasis on the emotional to his work. Last year at a conference I learned a technique called releasing the dragons (internal and external). I have heard that when you cannot get any movement within a person to heal or move past a traumatic experience this technique works. I know many acupuncturists who love it. It involves 7 points tonifying and sedating some are front points and the others are the back. If interested let me know and we can chat about it. The other thing I might suggest is Bach Flower Remedies these are great for mental issues actually Bach believed that when you are mentally healthy the body will follow. These are inexpensive and very safe. Search the net for info on what remedies to use and I will also send you some very general info on what each is used for.

Please do post more about this. I think it can help a lot of people.

'releasing the dragons' sounds fascinating- i would love to learn more

about it. in the past, my stepson has responded very well to acupuncture.

but, he's still quite timid about acupuncture so we like to hold off

on the needles unless he's actually physically ill. i would like to

learn more about the treatment though, and possibly try the same treatment

with acupressure or color therapy acupuncture.

is there a book or web site you could recommend?

thanks for the tip about Bach flower remedies. i will look into it now.

we have used 'rescue remedy' for many years with great results both for

our son and for us in case of stress, injury, etc.

thanks for responding!
