Taste and diagnosis

Having a particular taste in one's mouth when one has not consumed anything

with that taste can be a diagnostic tool.

The following information was taken from The Foundations of

by Giovanni Maciocia, p. 157.

" A bitter taste indicates a Full-Heat " (Excess Heat) " pattern, either of

Liver Or Heart. If it is due to Liver-Fire, the bitter taste is more or

less constant. If it is due to Heart-Fire, it is assoicated with insomnia,

and is only present in the morning after a sleepless night, and not after a

good night's sleep. " (Even though bitter has an affinity with the Heart, a

bitter taste in the mouth can indicate Excess Heat in the Liver as well as

in the Heart. If the bitter taste is constant, it's coming from Liver Fire.

If the bitter taste is only present in the morning and after a restless

night, this points to it being Heart Fire.)

" A sweet taste indicates either Spleen deficiency or Damp-Heat. " Actually,

if a person has a weak Spleen, it's very likely that the person will develop

Dampness problems because one of the roles of the Spleen is to transport and

transform water.

" A sour taste indicates retention of food in the Stomach or disharmony of

Liver and Stomach. " Even though sour has an affinity with the Liver, a sour

taste in the mouth often points to Stomach problems. But in actuality, a

lot of stomach problems may come from a Root of Liver imbalance. Like Liver

Invading Stomach. This is the 5 Element Victor-Vanquished thing again.

Wood (Liver) can Invade the Spleen (Earth) or the Stomach (Earth).

" A salty taste indicates Kidney-Yin deficiency. Lack of taste sensation

indicates Spleen deficiency. " (Note: From a Western standpoint the lack of

a sense of taste or a poor sense of taste also can indicate zinc deficiency.

" A pungent " (or sometimes metallic) " taste indicates Lung-Heat. "
