Here are some of the possible TCM Roots of insomnia:

Organ Syndrome:

Deficiency of Heart Blood

Deficiency of Heart Yin

Phlegm Fire Disturbing Heart

Liver Fire

Cold-induced Illness: ShaoYin-stage Deficiency Heat

Virulent Heat Illness:

Ying-stage Wind Heat

Ying-stage Wet Heat

Xue-stage Excess Heat

Xue-stage Yin Damage

Pericardium-stage Mucus Fire Obstruction

The organ syndromes tend to be chronic conditions, and the Cold-induced and

Virulent Heat illnesses tend to acute (and due to infection).

When you hear " insomnia " as a chronic symptom, automatically consider an

imbalance in the Heart and rule in or out. Also consider the Liver. The

total symptom picture will tell you which one is present or if both are

present. For example, if there also are problems with anger and the eyes,

pains in the sides, menstrual problems, etc. this points to Liver

involvement (though some Heart problems can produce visual symptoms). If

there are various mental and emotional problems, the person has trouble

weighing various courses of actions and reaching a practical and moral

decision, lacks " spirit " or is manic, there is pain in the chest, suspect

Heart involvement.

Note that insomnia tends to be a Heat condition - Deficiency (Yin

Deficiency) Heat or Excess Heat (Liver Fire, Phlegm Fire). Deficiency of

Blood can arise from a number of causes, the chief two being loss of blood

(due to menstrual bleeding, accidents, etc.) and Deficiency of Spleen Qi.

(The Spleen starts the production of Blood and Qi.)

Note that somnolence (wanting to sleep a lot) usually is a Cold condition or

related to a Cold condition.
