Guest guest
This is the season for maitake...a local supermarket by us used to carry these...but as it's changed names and all...not sure now if they will. Nice sliced and stir-fried. > >
Maitake: This delicious Japanese mushroom is also called " hen of the > >woods " because it grows in big clusters that resemble the fluffed tail > >feathers of a nesting hen. I disagree with Weil about taking this in caps. My understanding of its use is you really need to decoct it. Also, if you buy caps....beware...I had a bunch filled with cocoa...not Reishi, aka Ganoderma lucidum > > >
Reishi: Strictly a medicinal mushroom -- not a culinary one -- reishi > >is hard and woody and has a very bitter taste. Guest guest
YO Cathy! Hey girlfriend, and how about growing the little fun guys! A lot of the seed catalogs sell mushroom kits. I sent out 8 boxes of compost and spore as Solstice gifts last year. My family was thrilled but I don't think it was quite the hit with my husband's family. (I believe one brother-in-law's comment was " oh great, manure and fungus! Just what I always wanted.) 2 years ago at Herbfest the Mr. bought a log with shiitake plugs in it. I bought a huge plastic container and diligently sprayed the thing with water but nothing came of the adventure but mold. When spring arrived the Mr. put it out in the back yard. We argued over where it would get the least direct sun and each moved it about daily while the other was away at work. Finally the thing got tossed in the stinging nettle and there amongst the stinging nettle it blossomed shiitake. Blessed Be, Penel who's been sizing up the bird bath for a crop seaweed
