Guest guest
> Can you say a few words about what is in that book > that applies? Hara, dan tian, Life Gate. > Is the center vague, not well defined? Kiiko and Stephen also wrote " Hara Diagnosis : Reflections on the Sea " . I haven't plunked down the $60. to get an opportunity to read that book but I imagine if I did and was able to digest and assimilate it what I found in the " 5 Elements ... " wouldn't have knocked me off my feet so. ok, so they talk about hara. But according to the " Nan Ching " (the book they attempt to interpret as opposed to translate) they place what I've learned to call Supplemental Fire in Water as Small Fire, Fire of Water. They also call upon various other Chinese and Japanese texts to elaborate their point. They don't just state stuff. They explain stuff; gut stuff that I've been feeling in Shiatsu sessions and hatha yoga practice but couldn't and still can't put into words. > Is the center vague, not well defined? > Is this one of the reasons why it takes lots of words? No. It would take me far more words than they used because, compared to them, I'm an idiot and even then I wouldn't have done their research justice. Guest guest
>Hara, dan tian, Life Gate. For readers new to TCM, Conception Vessel 6, aka lower dan tian or lower Tan T'ien or lower tanden, aka Sea of Qi or Sea of Energy. It's located 2 to 3 finger widths below the navel on the midline of the front of the body. Texts differ according to 2 to 3 finger widths. This may be a point that you can find easier when lying down than when sitting or standing. There are some posts in the archives on a Hara breathing exercise. Oten when you try the breathing exercise you can feel a sensation in the area of the Hara. Ron Teeguarden in Chinse Tonic Herbs refers to it as the Seat of Jing (only he spells Jing as Ching). He also says it's possible to increase and preserve the Jing stored in the Kidneys with the use of Hara breathing exercises. Michael Reed Gach in Acupressure's Potent Points recommends the point for fatigue, allergies, lower back ache, constipation, diarrhea, boosting the immune system, impotency and sexual problems, PMS, stomach ache and indigestion and heartburn, and swelling and water retention. He says CV6 " relieves lower-back weakness, constipation, gas, and impotence; strengthens the lower back and replenishes energy reservoirs. " (p. 238) Maciocia in Foundations says CV 6 " tonifies Qi and Yang, regulates Qi, tonifies Original Qi, adn resolves Dampness. " It gets Qi moving in the lower abdomen when there is Qi Stagnation in this area. The getting the Qi moving in the lower abdomen is what gets rid of Dampness in the Lower Heater.
