In TCM, arthritis is seen as having factors of Wind, Cold, and/or Dampness. Most Western doctors realize that cold and damp weather can aggravate arthritis;, hence, the suggestion for arthritis sufferers to move to warm, dry climates. But few Western doctors realize that wind also can aggravate arthritis. The symptoms of the arthritis and rheumatism will vary according to which Pernicious Evil(s) is/ are the culprit(s). Wind Bi pain moves around the body - just like wind moves. Aches and pains will move around the body from day to day, even from hour to hour. In contrast, Damp and Cold Bi pain stay in place. Cold Bi pain can be particularly deep. Dampness tends to cause swelling. When there is redness and inflammation, there usually is a Heat component. There are special classes of herbs for treating arthritis and rheumatism.
