When a Pernicious Evil (Wind, Heat, Dampness, Dryness, or Cold) attacks the

Exterior, the more superficial areas of the body are being attacked. This

includes the arms and legs, the head and neck, and the shoudlers as well as

the skin, muscles, tendons, and meridians. Exterior attack often will be

characterized by pain or discomfort in the limbs, aching and sore muscles,

headache, and nasal and sinus congestion.

When a condition is Interior, the pain and discomfort and other symptoms

will be experienced in the trunk of the body. The organs are considered

Interior, and the meridians are considered Exterior.

Everything in is relative. Both skin and muscles are

Exterior, but the skin is more Exterior than the muscles. Likewise, all

organs are Interior, but the Lungs are the most Exterior of the Interior

organs.

There are certain points where the body is most vulnerable to Exterior

Pernicious Evils. Some of these areas are between the tips of the fingers

and the elbow and between the tips of the toes and the knee. In these areas

the flow of Qi (roughly translated energy) is unstable and close to the

surface of the body.

But, if the Pernicious Evil is not expelled, it can flow through the

meridians and certain points to the Interior of the body where it creates

more serious problems which are harder to resolve than Exterior problems.

Note: Even though the skin is Exterior and skin problems often point to

Exterior problems, not all skin problems are due to Exterior attack. Some

skin problems are due to Internal imbalance. One considers the total

picture when diagnosing.

A floating pulse (one that can be felt strongest with the least pressure on

the wrist) usually points to an Exterior problem. The reason the pulse can

be felt the strongest with the least pressure is the body's Qi is being

mobilized to fight an Exterior attack. The " action " is near the surface of

the body.

A sinking pulse (one that can be felt strongest with the most pressure on

the wrist) means there is an Interior problem.
