Guest guest
Can anyone tell me anything about the UCLA acupuncture training program? Are doctors in the program being trained in TCM concepts and TCM diagnosis, or are they just sticking needles in based on Western diagnoses? Thanks, Victoria ______________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

The reason I ask is that a doctor in the town where some of my relatives live has completed this course, and I wanted to know how good it is. Sounds like the UCLA graduates may be able to help some things, but they could make mistakes and are not getting the most out of acupuncture because they do lack extensive TCM training. Guest guest
Hello Victoria A doctor friend of mine went to the UCLA (Joe Helms) course for acupuncture. As I recall the course is 6 months and 2-3 visits on-site with Dr. Helms. I have seen some of the materials involved in his training (actually he does supply a lot of information). I have seen his book which is based more in French Energetic than TCM style of acupuncture. This style of acupuncture is based more on mathematical combinations Vs Chinese diagnosis. He does teach some TCM diagnosis but he was no fool when he designed this course he knew he would never get western docs to buy into TCM whole heartedly. My opinion is that he does cookbook acupuncture which a doctor could relate to. I do not think my doctor friend feels she has a real good handle on TCM and she is always asking for feedback. I guess I know 2 doctors that took his course. The other said that he felt he had a lot more studying to do beyond the Helms course but it was a good start. Minimal diagnostic education. More western diagnosis converted to cookbook TCM. Shane
