Guest guest
Another way to visualize the relationship the 5 Elements/Pathways have to each other is to draw a cross. At the top place Fire and at the bottom place Water. (This illustration hints at TCM's concept of Fire being the absorber and interpreter of life's experiences and deep Water's rule of the " sea of mallow " (the brain); How the mind is dependant upon the communication (shen) of Fire to Water.) The left arm would hold Wood and the right, Metal. At the center intersection one can find Earth. How can this be? Isn't the seasonal explanation that Fire is summer, Wood is spring, Water is winter, Metal is Fall and Earth is Indian summer? Why would we place Earth in the middle of all the Pathways? The season of Earth is also referred to as the season between seasons. (Indian summer is an obvious example of this.) Try visualizing it for its qualities; a point in time when we are home, when we can settle in with comfort to our foundations. Some have interpreted Earth's time of season to be at the equinoxes and solstices.
