Guest guest
Stomach Qi Rebelling Upward is not usually mentioned as a possible Root of asthma, and Stomach Qi Rebelling doesn't often manifest as asthma. But it can, and for that reason I wanted to do a post on it. In Western medicine, some cases of asthma are due to acid reflux from the stomach. What happens is some of the acid (or too alkaline) contents of the stomach escape from the stomach up the esophagus. This problem can be particularly bad when the person is lying down. Once in the esophagus (the food tube from the mouth to the stomach), the stuff from the stomach can get inhaled into the lungs. This can trigger asthma and spasm of the muscles and also scar the lungs. This is a condition that can be fatal over time because of the scarring of the lungs. The proper direction of the flow of Stomach Qi is downward. When Stomach Qi flows upward instead, this is one of the things that can cause nausea, belching, vomiting, hiccup, and acid reflux. Stoamch Qi Rebelling (ascending instead of descending like it's supposed to) can appear by itself, but usually it accompanies other patterns like Stomach Fire or Cold Invading Stomach. Another TCM syndrome that can manifest as acid reflux is Liver Invading Stomach. The Stagnant Liver Qi prevents the Stomach Qi from descending, and causes the Stomach Qi to rebel upwards, thus, triggering acid reflux. Whenever a person complains of having stomach discomfort at the same time as breathing problems, suspect that it may be acid reflux triggering the asthma, and consider Stomach Qi Rebelling. Another symptom will be that the person complains that the breathing problems are worse when s/he lies down. (Though other TCM patterns can also manifest as asthma being worse when the person is lying prone.) In order to correct the underlying Root of this asthma, you are going to have to subdue rebellious Qi and stimulate the descending of Stomach Qi. You can do this with herbs, some foods, and/or acupuncture/acupressure. If the Stomach Qi Rebelling is part of another problem - like Stomach Fire or Cold Invading Stomach or Liver Invading Stomach, you will have to treat those things too in order to bring the asthma and other problems under control. Qi Rebelling usually is classified as an Excess problem. (Qi sinking when it should be ascending usually is associated with a Deficiency problem.)
